Hello again from ejazzlines!

We are back from a much-needed week off, and now that the nation's highways, mountains, and deserts are safe, peaceful, and quiet again, we return with a new month's items. We thank everyone for their patience while we were away, and we truly appreciate those of you who were extra-patient while we were unable to respond in our usual very timely fashion in all cases. As we have been away for a while, we have quite a few interesting and hard-to-find things.

In ejazzlines' youth, we attended many jazz festivals all over the northeast, setting up a booth to sell DVDs, CDs and books. We had some truly memorable times at them, and met a great many fantastic customers of ours, but it was hard to enjoy the festivals in the context we attended them. Going as a fan is the way to do it, and right now is a great time to look into attending them, as most of the big ones should know their lineup, but have good tickets available. The major ones such as Newport, Saratoga, Litchfield and others have a great selection ranging from stars to the up-and-coming, and have very scenic locations as well. We seriously recommend attending one or two of them to get a true sense of the vitality and vibrance of jazz today.

We hope everyone is enjoying spring, wherever you may be, and we will see you again soon with more info and many more new musical items to offer.

We once again thank everyone for your support - it is sincerely appreciated every day of the year!

Rob and Doug at ejazzlines

FEATURED NEW BIG BAND ARRANGEMENTS:

COUNT ME IN [BASIE/BYERS]
Here is a great Billy Byers chart that epitomizes the laid-back Basie sound. This arrangement features written-out piano fills throughout and a harmon-muted trumpet solo (on trumpet 2, also written out). This has been engraved from the original manuscript, though we did transcribe the piano fills and trumpet solo. Chord changes have been provided in the event that your players wish to improvise instead.
MY WAY [SINATRA/COSTA]
Here is the tune that Frank Sinatra called "the national anthem", and it's a chart that is sure to bring the house down. Sinatra's classic version, written by Don Costa, was very orchestral, and it has been adapted here to suit a regular 5444 band line-up without losing the feel of the original, by re-scoring the string lines into the saxes, with the 1st alto doubling flute, and the 2nd alto doubling clarinet. The piano part is also written out in full.
TEMPTATION [PARKER/LIPMAN]
Here is Joe Lipman's brilliant big band with strings arrangement that he did for Charlie Parker. This was recorded in 1952 and is presented here directly from the original manuscript. This is NOT a transcription. However, everything Parker played on this recording has been transcribed and presented here as-played, though we have also included (in a separate staff) what was originally written for him. So, this arrangement can certainly be played without the need to mimic Bird. This chart was scored for solo alto sax, 2 altos (both double flute and alto 1 doubles picolo), 2 tenors (both double clarinet), baritone sax (doubles English horn - written in F), 3 trumpets, 2 trombones, 4 violins, 2 violas, 2 celli, harp, guitar, piano, bass, and drums. The brass parts have been augmented to 4 trumpets and 4 trombones. In addition, a baritone sax part with a clarinet double has been included in the event that you don't have access to an English horn.
JOOST AT THE ROOST [DAVIS/MULLIGAN]
Here is Gerry Mulligan's arrangement of Joost at the Roost engraved from the manuscript - this is not a transcription. This chart was never recorded. This piece has been arranged for alto saxophone, baritone saxophone, trumpet, horn in F, trombone, tuba, bass, and drums. Recognizing that not every band has access to a horn in F or a tuba, we've included a second trumpet part as an alternate for the horn part. And, a bass trombone would easily be able to play the tuba part in the event that you don't have that instrument at your disposal. But, also included is a tenor saxophone part as an alternate for the tuba. Featured are solos for trumpet, alto saxophone, baritone saxophone, piano, and trombone.
SELF-PORTRAIT IN THREE COLORS [MINGUS/JOHNSON]
Originally recorded by Charles Mingus on his Mingus Ah Um album in 1959, Sy Johnson has transformed this through-composed ballad into a stunningly beautiful setting for full jazz ensemble. Featuring effective dynamic contours, a nice variety of textures, and solos for trumpet and tenor, this will become a focal point for concerts or festivals.
I'VE GOT THE WORLD ON A STRING [O'CONNELL/MOONEY]
This is the original Helen O'Connell version of 'I've Got The World On A String,' as recorded with the Ray Anthony Orchestra on his 1953 Chesterfield Show. It is not a transcription. Although a short chart in actual playing time, it is full of punch, energy and drive, and in itself is a piece of American musical history. There are no sax doubles, and the vocal key is Bb throughout.
