April 2010 Update

April 2010 Update Newsletter: A Chart from the Gene Krupa Band and the Return of Venus CDs!

Click here to view this newsletter online

We are back once again to try to entice everyone with some very cool new items we have added to our site in the last couple of weeks.

Gene Krupa remains a truly beloved drummer and bandleader to this day. Often at ejazzlines we are asked about his band's library and why more of their charts are not available. Unfortunately, our latest release and the 105th chart in the Jazz Lines Publications catalog, If You Were the Only Girl (in the World) as arranged by Gerry Mulligan, is among the only extant Krupa charts. Gene's house apparently caught fire some months before he passed away in 1973, and much of his library, as well as many other precious effects, were lost. Marshall Brown, educator/trombonist/arranger, led a wonderful band of precocious teenagers called the Newport Youth Band, and had borrowed the arrangement of If You Were the Only Girl (in the World) from Mr. Krupa. Hence, it survived the horrific fire which took so many treasures. We are proud and excited to make it available to you!

As many of you have noticed, while we still have 25,000 compact discs on our site, we have not been listing new ones with as much frequency as in the past. Well, that changes this month! We have finally received copies of several of the latest releases by a label that is a favorite with a great many customers of ours, Venus out of Japan. Eric Alexander's Gentle Ballads 4 is in stock, as are several others by Mr. Alexander, Kenny Werner, John Di Martino, the NY Trio with Ken Peplowski, and the late and great Eddie Higgins. We are not sure how long stock will hold out on these hard-to-find discs, but, as always, we will do our best to make them available as long as we can.

The Jazz Education Network's very first conference is approaching. It will take place in St. Louis the 3rd week of May, and we again most enthusiastically encourage everyone to check out their website, and if attendance is at all possible, and if you liked IAJE, we seriously suggest considering it! Their website is: www.jazzednet.org.

We once again thank everyone for your support - it is sincerely appreciated every day of the year!

alt CHET BAKER: IN A MELLOW MOOD
During his long and sometimes tragic career, Chet Baker came to epitomize cool jazz. In this 1985 performance, which also features Red Mitchell and Jean-Louis Rassinfosse, he allows a rare, insightful glimpse into the artistry that propelled him to fame. As a trumpet player of mythic proportions and a singer with an extraordinarily sensitive vocal style, Chet Baker gave the world some of the best music put on record. Even today, his sound still has the ability to mystify and enthrall.
alt CHRIS POTTER MASTERCLASS
Here's the newest in the Masterclass DVD Series from Roberto's Winds! As Mr. Potter says himself: "A lot of times I'm working on sound-just sound and articulation. I think I've spent a lot of time on this because this is the first thing people hear. They just hear the SOUND of the horn. It's a life-long thing. As much as there is to learn about harmony and rhythm and form, there's at least as much to learn about sound and how to get from one note to the next."
alt BLUESLAND: A PORTRAIT IN AMERICAN MUSIC
Bluesland: A Portrait in American Music explores the blues, with all its poetic irony and sly humor, its eroticism and timeless power. A uniquely creative and highly visual look at American blues, Bluesland travels the expansive landscape of the music, tracing its roots from the beginning of the 20th century through the Mississippi Delta to Louisiana, Texas, Kansas City and Chicago. Some artists making appearances in Bluesland: A Portrait of American Music are Bessie Smith, B.B. King, Muddy Waters, Son House, Jimmy Rushing, Dinah Washington, Leadbelly, Big Bill Broonzy, Big Joe Turner, T-Bone Walker, and Sonny Boy Williamson.
alt GOSPEL CALLING: MAHALIA JACKSON SINGS
Available for the first time in this special, two-disc collector's set is the complete collection of Mahalia Jackson Sings, 58 live short performances which aired on NBC in the early '60s. Includes such hits as 'You'll Never Walk Alone,' 'The Lord's Prayer.' 'Go Tell it on the Mountain,' 'Throw Out the Lifeline,' 'Down by the Riverside' and 'When the Saints Go Marching in.'

FEATURED NEW BIG BAND ARRANGEMENTS:

We're very pleased to announce the availability of two great Gerry Mulligan arrangements: If You Were the Only Girl (in the World) from the Gene Krupa book and the previously mentioned Jeru from the Claude Thornhill book. Both of these arrangements have been published from the original scores: these are not transcriptions. In the next few weeks we'll have the rest of Gerry's arrangements from the Birth of the Cool album.

APRIL 2010 BIG BAND CHARTS
MARCH 2010 BIG BAND CHARTS

alt IF YOU WERE THE ONLY GIRL (IN THE WORLD): GENE KRUPA/GERRY MULLIGAN
This is one of the few arrangements from the Gene Krupa book that has survived in its original form (not including published stock arrangements). Mulligan wrote this for Krupa's 1958 recording date featuring Gerry's arrangements. The arrangement showcases harmon-muted trumpet on the melody. Substitute harmonies are tasteful, and Gerry was already showing his mastery of linear writing.
alt JERU: CLAUDE THORNHILL/GERRY MULLIGAN
The period from 1948-9 was a time of experimenting and discovering for the young Gerald Mulligan. Encouraged by Gil Evans to move to New York, Mulligan not only became a mainstay at Evans' 55th Street apartment, but acquired a mentor in Evans, who encouraged Mulligan by getting him work writing for the Claude Thornhill Orchestra. Mulligan was one of the group of musicians who developed and wrote for what would become the Miles Davis Nonet. Except for Venus De Milo, Mulligan not only arranged his own compositions for the small ensemble, but wrote versions of them for big bands led by Thornhill or fellow Philadelphian Elliot Lawrence. This is Gerry's fantastic chart of his tune Jeru as recorded by Claude Thornhill.
HAVEN'T MET YOU YET: MICHAEL BUBLE
Extended from the original version to full big band, with strings on synth part, as well as a separate keyboard. This chart will work with 3 front line (alto, tenor, tpt) and 4 rhythm.
EAST SIDE, WEST SIDE (SIDEWALKS OF NEW YORK): CHARLIE BARNET/ANDY GIBSON
This is a transcription of Charlie Barnet's original version (recorded in Hollywood in 1947), which also featured Bunny Briggs doing a scat vocal solo over the band in the first chorus. A vocal part for this scat has NOT been included preferring instead to have the chart as a band vocal feature. Barnet's tenor solo is written out in full (on the tenor 1 part), along with the little soprano sax lick at the end, though this can be played on tenor instead. The trumpet solo is written out on the trumpet 2 part. There are no sax doubles.
