Hello again from ejazzlines!

Well, summer has finally settled in here in New York with temperatures in the 90s. It's just about time to head out to the pool (we wish), but as the water calls us, first we'd like to share some new jazz releases with you. But, before we do, we want to send a special hello to all the band directors and educators out there. As we move closer to the beginning of the new school year (or has it already begun for you?) we want to point out a couple of things that will make your jazz band music purchasing easier.

We recognize that you have many choices of where you may order music from, so we have tried to assemble the most complete and user-friendly online catalog available. We carry nearly 3,000 arrangements from publishers located all over the world. We also have an educational program to provide our vast jazz catalog at discounted prices. All school band directors are automatically enrolled in our program and there is no miminum order to receive discounts. In addition, you may complete purchase orders directly on our website without the need of a credit card. For more information about our educational program, please email or phone us.

If you're hunting for some great jazz band arrangements you may view titles on our website by any of the following criteria: By Month of Release; By Performer (for famous arrangements); By Arranger; By Style; By Difficulty Level; Vocal Arrangements; Instrumental Features; Festival Suggestions; Opener/Closer Suggestions; Holiday Arrangements; Jazz at Lincoln Center Arrangements; and By Group Size (for small group and combo arrangements). If all else fails, contact us; we're happy to assist you with finding what you're looking for.

NEW DVDs:
Rejoice Shirley Horn fans! Finally there's a DVD featuring her playing and singing! Shirley Horn: Live at the Village Vanguard was filmed in 1991, and features her longtime partners Charles Ables on bass and Steve Williams on drums. Absolutely gorgeous ballads. This is Shirley at her best. We also need to mention another great new vocal DVD, this one celebrating the First Lady of Song, Ella Fitzgerald. We Love Ella was filmed on April 29th at the University of Southern California's Galen Center and was co-hosted by Natalie Cole and Quincy Jones. Featured artists include Wynonna, Dave Koz, George Duke, Jon Faddis, James Moody, Patti Austin, Take 6, Lizz Wright, Stevie Wonder, and Nancy Wilson. They also dug up some great performance footage of Ella as well. We're all aware of the devastation of New Orleans that Hurricane Katrina left in her wake. Acclaimed filmmaker Robert Mugge has just released a new documentary New Orleans Music in Exile that examines the displacement of Cajun, blues, r&b, jazz and zydeco music acts following the 2005 hurricane. Rather than focusing on the catastrophe, he focuses on which acts left the city, to where they migrated, when they'll return, and how New Orleans compensated for that loss. Guitar fans will be happy to see the release of Super Guitar Trio: Live at Montreux 1989. The Super Guitar Trio (Al DiMeola, Larry Coryell, and Bireli Lagrene) was captured here at Montreux during the only tour they did together. Here is some incredible, virtuosic, inspiring playing that may just make you take out your guitar and start practicing!

NEW CDs:
August, so far, has seen some nice CDs being released. Recently received from Japan is Great Jazz Trio: Greatest Hits of Standards, Vol. 2: Stardust. This incarnation of The Great Jazz Trio features Hank Jones, Mads Vinding, and Billy Hart and was recorded in the late 1980s. Harry Allen fans will be happy to see that the Sackville label, based in Canada, has released a fine recording titled Cocktails for Two featuring Joe Temperley, John Bunch, Greg Cohen, and Jake Hanna, along with tenor-giant Allen. In typical fashion, the recording features a great collection of standards. The Wounded Bird label continues to document the early to mid-career of Maynard Ferguson with their latest release The Ballad Side of Maynard Ferguson. And, lastly we want to mention a new label called Explore Records that has been hard at work re-issuing out-of-print and rare gems. Some of their first offerings focus on reed-master and arranger Bob Mintzer. Previously available only in Japan is Bop Boy which features Steve Kuhn, Eddie Gomez, and Steve Gadd. Also take a look at Mintzer's Longing with Gil Goldstein and Papa Lips featuring The Horn Man Band.

NEW PLAY-ALONGS AND BOOKS:
Calling all play-along fans! Actually, we're some of the biggest fans of play-alongs, they are invaluable for practicing improvising. Several new series have been released including Authentic Jazz Play-Along: I Got Rhythm; Big Band Play-Along Vol.2: Popular Hits; Romantic Latin Play-Along; and Swinging Baroque Play-Along. And, let's not forget to mention that we also have both of the newest play-alongs from the king of the play-along, Jamey Aebersold: Miles of Modes and Feelin Good. Vocalists check out the newly released Real Vocal Book, Vol. 2 and the companion Real Vocal Book, Vol. 1 - these 2 volumes dovetail nicely with their instrumental counterparts The Real Book. And, we can't forget the guitarists: Exploring Jazz Guitar is perfect for the beginning guitarist who wants to learn more about jazz. This book provides a comprehensive introduction to the world of Jazz Guitar. Voices in Jazz Guitar, a new book by Joe Barth, gathers interviews and historical information to present what is arguably the most thoroughly researched book on jazz guitar ever published.
