MOONGLOW: TERRY GIBBS DREAM BAND/AL COHN Here is an absolutely gorgeous chart by master arranger Al Cohn. This was written for the Terry Gibbs Dream Band and recorded in 1959 live at the Sundown Club in Hollywood, CA. This arrangement features a trumpet solo (part of it written out by Al Cohn, for trumpet 4) and an alto saxophone solo. As with all of the Dream Band charts, this arrangement is full of rich, sophisticated harmonies and interesting rhythmic sequences. We have published this arrangement from the original parts as supplied to us by Terry Gibbs. |
WHEN LIGHTS ARE LOW: BENNY CARTER 'When Lights Are Low' is Carter's most popular song, recorded many times over the years. Perhaps the most famous version was made by Miles Davis in 1953. The arrangement presented here was first performed by an all-star big band led by Carter for a concert at Princeton University in 1973. The parts reveal that Carter made quite a few changes over many performances of this setting; there are cross-outs, paste-overs and rewrites in pencil by several hands. This is the final version of Carter's arrangement. |
LA NEVADA: GIL EVANS Gil Evans made two albums for the World Pacific label in 1958 and 1959. On the second of the two albums, 'Out of the Cool,' the last track was an original composition called La Nevada. One of the few original compositions that Evans wrote during this period, La Nevada, is a loose chart designed to allow the band to open up. The theme itself is arranged, but very little else is. Evans was veering toward a more improvised ensemble music that would evolve over many performances. This is a great chart to work on open playing and the concepts behind background improvisation. |
MESSA STOMP: MARY LOU WILLIAMS Here is one of the classic, early big band arrangements by Mary Lou Williams. Written for Andy Kirk's band in 1929, this arrangement helped to usher in the big band style. The arrangement is scored for 2 alto saxophones (alto 1 doubles clarinet), tenor saxophone, 2 trumpets, trombone, guitar (or banjo), piano, bass, and drums. Featured is a splendid piano solo presented here as-played by Mary Lou. |
IN A MIST: BUNNY BERIGAN/JOE LIPMAN In 1938 Bunny Berigan recorded a tribute to Bix Beiderbecke. The arrangements were done by the piano player, Joe Lipman. Joe went on to become a successful commercial arranger and is known to Charlie Parker fans for his string and big band arrangements featuring Bird. Bix's tune 'In a Mist' was a groundbreaking composition in that it employs impressionistic scales and chord sequences that were not common to popular music at the time. Lipman has brilliantly captured the feel of the composition in this 6 horn arrangement. The original score calls for clarinet, tenor saxophone, bass clarinet, 2 trumpets, trombone, piano, bass, and drums. We have added a guitar part. In addition, the clarinet part may be played by a soprano saxophone and we have included a baritone saxophone part as an alternate for the bass clarinet - though we encourage you to use the bass clarinet part to achieve the proper balance. |
I'M COMING VIRGINIA: BENNY CARTER Here is Benny Carter's great sax ensemble arrangement as recorded in 1938 with Django Reinhardt on guitar. This arrangement features 2 altos, 2 tenors, guitar, piano, bass, and drums. An open solo section is included so that you may feature any number of soloists. This is a difficult but absolutely superb arrangement. |

THE MUSIC WITHIN For those involved in choral music, 95% of the work is spent away from the conductor's podium. In fact, the most important aspect of their teaching and of their lives is wrapped up in the person that they are or their own authenticity. What is shared with students depends on one's own individual journey and what one is willing and able to communicate with them through music. This DVD and workbook will remind you of the days of youth and free spirit as well as help you to rediscover the "creativity volume knob" and turn it back to forte, where it belongs! |
