Band Director News June 2010
Hello Big Band Directors!
We've been hard at work searching out great new jazz big band and combo arrangements. While we're especially proud of the historic arrangements we publish,
we're also always excited to announce great new releases that come from other publishers. In the last month we here at Jazz Lines Publications have released
several classic charts including two more legendary Benny Carter sax ensemble arrangements:
Blue Star and
Titmouse.
These join the previously released Doozy
and Rock Bottom. In the coming months we'll be releasing many of BC's
sax ensemble arrangements from his 'Further Definitions' and 'Additions to Further Definitions' records.
All of our new arrangements are based on the original scores and/or parts that we engrave and edit. In addition, our master editor Jeffrey Sultanof
writes a forward containing historic and performance notes for each arrangement. We're proud to be working on restoring and preserving historic jazz music.
There have also been several Alfred and Smart Chart arrangements released in the last month. Alfred is doing a great job of releasing new arrangements of standards such as
Anthropology,
Lazy Bird,
Raincheck,
Willow Weep for Me, and
Naima. Mike Carubia at Smart Chart has recently released
several new arrangements including Andy Farber's Bling,
Carl Strommen's Phat Chance, and his own compositions
Minor Yours?,
Sweet Lucy Brown, and
Lonely Days.
Please feel free to email or phone us with comments or suggestions. We have a lot of great releases of historic arrangements planned for this year.
Our mission will remain to restore and preserve America's musical heritage.
Best Regards, Rob and Doug www.ejazzlines.com SOME HIGHLIGHTS OF NEW ARRANGEMENTS ADDED IN MAY 2010 AND JUNE 2010: BLUE STAR [AS RECORDED BY BENNY CARTER / ARRANGED BY BENNY CARTER] This arrangement of Blue Star is a lovely ballad featuring a solo section for alto 1. Unlike the other arrangements in this series, this one features 2 altos and 2 tenors with rhythm section. There is no baritone saxophone in this arrangement. TITMOUSE [AS RECORDED BY BENNY CARTER / ARRANGED BY BENNY CARTER] Here is Benny's great swinging sax ensemble arrangement from the 1966 record 'Additions to Further Definitions.' CHARLIE'S OTHER AUNT [AS RECORDED BY CHARLIE BARNET/ ARRANGED BY MANNY ALBAM] Here is Manny Albam's great, fast-swinging arrangement of 'Charlie's Other Aunt.' This arrangement was recorded twice in 1949 and again in 1958 at a slightly slower tempo. This festival-worthy piece will show off your band and your trumpet, trombone, piano, and tenor soloists! NOW'S THE TIME [AS RECORDED BY SUPERSAX/ ARRANGED BY MED FLORY] This arrangement of 'Now's the Time' was recorded on the 1977 record 'Chasin' the Bird.' We also have a big band version of this arrangement. Med Flory adapted it for his big band, though it was never recorded. See catalog number JLP-8147. NOW'S THE TIME [ARRANGED BY MED FLORY] Med Flory took the arrangement of Now's the Time that was recorded on the 1977 record 'Chasin' the Bird' and added brass parts so that it could be played by a big band featuring the sax section. The original Supersax arrangement of Now's the Time as recorded is also available (JLP-8234). This big band version has not been recorded. IT HAPPENED IN SUN VALLEY [RECORDED BY GLENN MILLER / ARRANGED BY BILL FINEGAN] 'It Happened in Sun Valley' was written for the 1941 film 'Sun Valley Serenade,' featuring Sonja Henie, John Payne and the Glenn Miller Orchestra with the Modernaires. The Miller chart has been recreated and has been scored for a full big band and five-piece vocal backing group, though it is singable with only a boy/girl duo. TAKING A CHANCE ON LOVE [RECORDED BY BENNY GOODMAN / ARRANGED BY FLETCHER HENDERSON] Taking a Chance on Love was written in 1940, and despite being a last minute inclusion for the Broadway musical 'Cabin in the Sky' it became the show's most enduring hit. Benny Goodman recorded this version in 1940, featuring the vocal of Helen Forrest. It was re-released in 1943 and charted for 14 weeks including 3 weeks at the number one spot. HEY THERE [RECORDED BY BETTE MIDLER] Transcribed from the album 'Bette Midler Sings the Rosemary Clooney Songbook' this chart was written by Adler and Ross for the musical 'The Pajama Game,' and was a huge hit for Rosemary Clooney. ANTHROPOLOGY [ARRANGED BY VICTOR GOINES] Here is a great Victor Goines arrangement of the Charlie Parker/Dizzy Gillespie classic bebop tune. This has been arranged for experienced bands.
