February 2011 Newsletter: The Release of The Zodiac Suite and The Benny Carter Jazz Festival

As the snow continues to bury us here in New York State, we'd like to take this opportunity to introduce several exciting new Jazz Lines Publications charts. Leading our offerings this February is the debut publication of a Mary Lou Williams, multi-movement concert masterwork.

In 1945, Mary Lou Williams was playing at a club called Café Society, owned by Barney Josephson. She also had a weekly radio program. Josephson suggested that she write something ambitious for the radio show, and she wound up conceiving a suite based on the signs of the zodiac. The individual pieces were to honor her friends born under each of the signs. It was Josephson who conceived of a concert of the suite, and produced it at Town Hall on New Year's Eve day of 1945. Now famous as an early example of jazz in the concert hall, the Zodiac Suite is an important part of American music history. We are honored to present this chamber work in its entirely, engraved from the original scores and parts, done under the auspices of Fr. Peter O'Brien, the director of the Mary Lou Williams Foundation.

We also encourage anyone within reasonable distance to consider attending the Benny Carter Jazz Festival. This gala event is being conducted by friend of ejazzlines Thomas Heinze, at Marywood University, in Scranton, Pennsylvania. It is occurring on Friday-Sunday February 25-27. Eminent Benny Carter scholar Ed Berger of the Institute of Jazz Studies at Rutgers University will be the guest lecturer, and will be giving pre-concert lectures all weekend. Guest artists and clinicians for the Saturday program will be Phil Woods and Chris Neville, who will work with the students and also be featured soloists in the Saturday evening concert. Mrs. Hilma Carter will also be a guest of the festival for the entire weekend. Much more information can be found at www.marywood.edu/mtd/events/jazz-festival.html and please contact Mr. Heinze at tomoboe@comcast.net with any questions. This event promises to be a fantastic tribute to one of the giants of 20th century American music.

We once again thank everyone for your support - it is sincerely appreciated every day of the year!

ZODIAC SUITE [COMPLETE]: MARY LOU WILLIAMS
An important piece of American Music History is finally available for performance and study! This multi-movement work takes about 30 minutes for performance. The piece is scored for flute/piccolo, oboe, clarinet/bass clarinet, bassoon, trumpet, horn in F, trombone, 2 violins, 2 violas, cello, piano, bass, and drums. In addition, the Cancer movement features a tenor saxophone soloist and the Pisces movement features a female vocalist. The movements correspond to the 12 zodiac signs: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces.
alt
WHAT'S YOUR STORY, MORNING GLORY: MARY LOU WILLIAMS
This arrangement of What's Your Story, Morning Glory was written for Andy Kirk to feature a male vocalist (Pha Terrell) and clarinet (John Harrington). We have adapated the arrangement so that it may be played as clarinet (or alto sax) feature instead. The key is Db. This was recently recorded by the Dutch Jazz Orchestra on their tribute to Mary Lou Williams.
alt
THE FAT MAN: TERRY GIBBS DREAM BAND/MANNY ALBAM
Here is Manny Albam's arrangement of The Fat Man as recorded by the Terry Gibbs Dream band in 1959. This arrangement was written to feature Terry on vibes, but we have included optional Bb and Eb soloist parts so that it may be played with any featured soloist. This is not a transcription, as the original parts (as licensed from Terry Gibbs) were used to publish this arrangement.
alt
JUST PLAIN TALKIN': TADD DAMERON
Tadd Dameron wrote this arrangement for Benny Goodman in 1962 for his tour of Russia (it wasn't recorded). He based it on the arrangement that he had recently written for his Magic Touch record. This arrangement is very close to the one from the Magic Touch album. Since there isn't a recording of this arrangement, we have included a sample that was recorded on the Magic Touch album, which will give you an idea of the feel of the chart.

FEATURED NEW BOOKS:

In addition to the newest items available this month, we must again pay tribute to the unusually excellent selection offered in January. Two Gordon Goodwin play-alongs, Volumes 2 and 3 of Greg Fishman's Jazz Phrasing for Saxophone, and the Storyville Presents Teddy Wilson transcription book indeed make January's choices worth a long second look. To complement the below, we also have Alfred's New Frontier for Drumset, Colin's Pocket Trumpet Pieces for Practice and Recital, Mel Bay's Flamenco Guitar Guide, and Hal Leonard's Shuffle Blues Play-Along, Building Bass Drum Technique, and Frank Sinatra: More of His Best-Original Keys for Singers.
