February marches on in its annual mission to give way to spring, and we are back again with many more new arrangements, books, and DVDs to hopefully broaden your jazz horizons during these waning days of an especially rude winter.

Today is Tadd Dameron's birthday, and marks the 94th anniversary of his birth. Dameron was a prolific arranger and composer, and is widely regarded of one of the greatest and most influential arrangers of the bebop era. He arranged for the bands of Count Basie, Dizzy Gillespie, Sarah Vaughan and many others. His tremendous talents have been recognized for three-quarters of a century. Jazz Lines Publications is honored to work with his widow Mia to publish Tadd's arrangements, in the hope of continuing to widen the availability of the musical contributions of this eminent jazz figure.

We once again encourage anyone within reasonable distance to consider attending this weekend's Benny Carter Jazz Festival. This gala event is being conducted by friend of ejazzlines Thomas Heinze, at Marywood University, in Scranton, Pennsylvania. It is occurring on Friday-Sunday February 25-27. Guest artists and clinicians for the Saturday program will be Phil Woods and Chris Neville, who will work with the students and also be featured soloists in the Saturday evening concert. More information can be found at www.marywood.edu/mtd/events/jazz-festival.html and please contact Mr. Heinze at tomoboe@comcast.net with any questions. This event promises to be a fantastic tribute to one of the giants of 20th century American music.

We once again thank everyone for your support - it is sincerely appreciated every day of the year!

FEATURED NEW ARRANGEMENTS:

We continue to broaden our library with more classic, historic arrangements, the most recent being more from Charlie Parker With Strings, Tadd Dameron, and Terry Gibbs. We also remind everyone of the early February releases from Mary Lou Williams, which included her opus The Zodiac Suite, as well as What's Your Story Morning Glory?

ALL FEBRUARY 2011 NEW ARRANGEMENTS
ALL JANUARY 2011 NEW ARRANGEMENTS

alt
GOOD BAIT: TADD DAMERON
This version of Good Bait includes the unison brass line after the instrumental solos. All of the BVC publications had numerous errors in pitch, rhythm and transposition. This publication of Good Bait has been newly edited and corrected.
alt
OUR DELIGHT: TADD DAMERON
Dameron arranged Our Delight for the Billy Eckstine Orchestra, and when that ensemble folded, Dizzy Gillespie added the setting to his book, playing it frequently. When he recorded The Magic Touch for Riverside Records, he made a new setting of the tune. This version of Our Delight is the same as the arrangement Dameron wrote for The Magic Touch LP, only re-scored for traditional big band with some modifications.
alt
MOON FROM THE EAST: TADD DAMERON
In 1962 Tadd Dameron was commissioned by Benny Goodman to arrange a number of pieces for an upcoming tour of the Soviet Union. Tadd turned out several great arrangements including Swift as the Wind, Our Delight, Good Bait, On a Misty Night, and this arrangement of Moon from the East.
alt
THE CLAW: TERRY GIBBS DREAM BAND/MED FLORY
Here is Med Flory's arrangement of The Claw as recorded by the Terry Gibbs Dream band in 1959. This same chart was later recorded by Woody Herman during his tour of Japan in 1982. This arrangement is pure fun and swings like crazy. This arrangement was written to feature Terry on vibes, but we have included optional Bb and Eb soloist parts so that it may be played with any featured soloist.
alt
SCOOTIN': CHARLIE PARKER WITH STRINGS/JOHN LEWIS
This John Lewis arrangement was written for Charlie Parker in 1950. The arrangement was never recorded, and from the look of the original parts, it was never played. This arrangement is unlike the commercial-sounding arrangements in the Bird with Strings book. Lewis was breaking ground with this arrangement and the style is very much in a Tristano vein. We have included a midi sound sample of the arrangement (without the alto, piano, and drums). This will give you an idea of the arrangement.
I'M YOUR MAN: MICHAEL BUBLE
This relaxed Leonard Cohen ballad from Michael Buble's album 'Call Me Irresponsible' has been transcribed and adapted by Cy Payne. Key and modulation as recording.

FEATURED NEW DVDs:

The last few weeks have seen many more excellent DVDs added to our offerings. In addition to the below, we have live discs featuring Clark Terry, Ella Fitzgerald, Dexter Gordon, and three starring Gerry Mulligan, including one with his quartet with Art Farmer. We also have Play Cajon Now, Essential Blues Guitar, two Cuban bass DVD lessons from Dany Noel, three interesting documentaries on the music of the Beatles, and several other new instructional and live DVDs.

TOWER OF POWER 40TH ANNIVERSARY
This 40th anniversary concert, recorded at The Fillmore in San Francisco, is a must have for the legions of fans who flock to the band's 125+ concerts each year. Opening with an introduction by the legendary Bill Graham, who gave the band their first break, this live DVD set is loaded with extras and includes original band members. The 20 song performance is a veritable greatest of the greatest hits, and is interspersed with wonderful interviews with current and former players.
alt
MAYNARD FERGUSON BIG BAND AND TONY SCOTT QUARTET: LIVE IN PRAGUE 1968
Recorded live on November 20, 1968 at the Prague Jazz Festival, in Prague, Czechoslovakia, this concert release actually features two unrelated live sets backed by Czech musicians: one headlined by the 13-piece Maynard Ferguson Big Band, and another headlined by The Tony Scott Quartet. Maynard is featured with the Gustav Brom Orchestra, while Tony Scott is accompanied by a 3-piece local Czech rhythm section.
alt
ELLA FITZGERALD AND JOE PASS: DUETS IN HANNOVER 1975
The TV show presented here, which opens with Pass playing alone on six wonderful tunes, was made during a European tour that took place some months before the recording of their second album as a duet, titled precisely Fitzgerald & Pass Again. Thus, it presents some tunes that would be part of that LP, making this program (and probably the whole tour) a kind of rehearsal for the songs to be included on the studio album.
alt
BUDDY RICH BIG BAND: LIVE IN GERMANY 1986 / LONDON 1973
The splendid concerts presented on this DVD come from the last two decades of Buddy Rich's life and show him in front of his famous big band. Besides displaying his enormous talent on the drums, Buddy (who was also a singer) shows his talents as an announcer here, introducing each song in a humorously histrionic style.
alt
CHET BAKER LIVE IN TOKYO
This performance by legendary jazz horn player Chet Baker was recorded in Tokyo, Japan on June 14, 1987 and features such classics as "Stella by Starlight," "My Funny Valentine," and "I'm a Fool to Want You." Accompanying Baker in the performance are Harold Danko on piano, Hein van de Gein on bass, and John Engels on drums.
alt
SONNY STITT / J.J. JOHNSON SEXTET: WE REMEMBER BIRD - BERLIN AND LONDON 1964
This release features footage from two different 1964 television appearances by a sextet of musicians paying tribute to the legendary Charlie Parker. Led by saxophonist Sonny Stitt, the musicians, who all had performed regularly with Parker, perform a number of songs the man known as "Bird" made famous including "My Little Suede Shoes," "Buzzy," and "Now's the Time."
alt
DEXTER GORDON QUARTET LIVE IN SAN FRANCISCO 1979
Bop saxophonist Dexter Gordon headlines this live concert, filmed in San Francisco in 1979 with bassist Rufus Reid, drummer Eddie Gladden and pianist George Cables. Selections include "Polka Dots and Moonbeams," "Tanya," and "On Green Dolphin Street."
alt
DIZZY GILLESPIE: LONDON CONCERTS 1965 AND 1966
The first concert presents Diz fronting his own quintet on November 30, 1965, with such important musicians as James Moody and Kenny Barron. The second, filmed on November 26, 1966 according to most recent research, has him as part of an all star program that also includes Clark Terry, Zoot Sims, Teddy Wilson, Bob Cranshaw and Louis Bellson, plus, again, James Moody. In all, an splendid DVD full of rarely seen performances.

PIANO FITNESS
This book will give you a thorough technical workout, while having fun at the same time! The accompanying CD allows you to play along with a rhythm section as you practice your scales, arpeggios, and chords in all keys. Instead of avoiding technique exercises because they seem too tedious or difficult, you'll look forward to playing them. You'll never be unsure about how to play each example, because all the exercises have fingerings provided. Various voicings and rhythmic settings, which are extremely useful in a variety of pop and jazz styles, are also introduced.
alt
ODD TIMES
Master teacher Joe Porcaro leads you through odd time signatures with simple-to-understand breakdowns of complex meters in many styles including jazz, funk, rock, Afro-Cuban, and many more! Odd Times contains great new ideas for samba, cha-cha, songo, and bossa nova. This excellent collection of rhythmic ideas is a must-have for every serious drumset player, and is also recommended for composers looking to discover new rhythmic ideas as well as to understand complex meters.
alt
FLUTE THEORY WORKOUT
Scales and chords are the two most fundamental and important elements of pitch organization in music, and that is why this workout focuses on them. Your primary goal should be to play all of the scales and arpeggios in this workout with the right notes, perfectly in time and in tune, and with a beautiful sound, at whatever tempo you wish. This alone, however, does not make you fluent in those scales and arpeggiated chords; to be fluent; you must also understand the structure of the different scales, how they relate to one another, and how they are used in actual music.
alt
MAINTAINING TRUMPET CHOPS
Maintaining Chops is a method for all trumpet players interested in keeping their lips and playing ability (chops) strong and ready for any performance. It is designed to keep muscles honed and a trumpeter's lips always fresh no matter what musical demands are required by upcoming performances. The method also instills needed mental tools necessary to play tunes in all keys and to produce quality solos. An easy to use method yielding powerful results! Intermediate level.
alt
HENRY MANCINI PLAY-ALONG
Containing eight cream-of-the-crop songs each, the books in this series feature new engravings, with a separate vocal staff, plus guitar frames, so players and their friends can sing or strum along. The CDs feature two tracks for each tune: a full performance for listening, and a separate backing track that lets players take the lead on keyboard. The high-quality, sound-alike accompaniments exactly match the printed music.
