Mobley, Hank
Hank Mobley was a relative latecomer to music, not beginning studies on tenor saxophone until he was 16. By his early 20s, he was already performing professionally with such names as Dizzy Gillespie and Max Roach. He broke into high notoriety during his stint with the earliest version of what would become known as the Jazz Messengers, eventually leaving to perform with pianist Horace Silver and pursue a solo career.
Mobley would become a ubiquitous presence on the Blue Note label in the late 1950s, appearing on countless sessions as both a leader and a sideman. His gifts as a tenor saxophonist and composer were present wherever he went, and his style was described as serving as a middle ground between the more intense experimentalism of John Coltrane and Sonny Rollins and the laid-back sounds of Stan Getz and Zoot Sims.
By the late 1970s, Mobley was forced to largely retire from playing due to health problems. He passed away in 1986, leaving behind a tremendous catalogue of classic recordings and compositions.
