January 2010 Newsletter

Click here to view this newsletter online

January has taken off for us rather quickly at ejazzlines. We thank everyone most sincerely for helping to allow us and our valued staff to take a little time off at the holidays. We did our best to be in touch as quickly as we could, and our customers' flexibility was, as always, most certainly noted and truly appreciated.

Our newsletter is filled with great new method, theory, and songbook items, ranging from a long-awaited Oscar Peterson play-along, to Greg Fishman's newest creative theory book, to transcriptions of the music of Tommy Flanagan and Steve Gadd, to a Bud Powell Real Book, and much more. In other words, it looks like a perfect time for everyone to shake off the holiday tinsel and get back to work!

Jazz Lines Publications' 86th chart is 2009's finale, Ko Ko, the 15th in our Supersax line. This chart really makes one realize how good Med Flory and his crew were. It is blazing-fast, and sounds as fantastic as it does intimidating - a great workout! 2010 will continue our growth, with current lines expanding, and new projects to be announced over the course of the year.

We'd like to take a moment and introduce two people who you'll be hearing a lot more from in the coming years. First, we want to present our esteemed publications editor Jeffrey Sultanof. Jeff is a pro. He's been editing manuscripts for publication for over 30 years. We're thrilled to have him working with us. And, also recently jumping on board is Mike Fortune. A drummer, percussionist, and music educator by trade, Mike brings a wealth of jazz knowledge to our office. We're happy to have them as part of our jazz team.

2010 will continue ejazzlines' markedly increased effort to meet many more of you at conventions and gatherings at locations far and wide. We know a huge amount of wonderful people in Indiana, where people occasionally stop watching basketball long enough to notice the great bands playing in their arenas! Our Hoosier friends and colleagues range from world-class bandleaders and instructors, to some of our very best college and university customers, to Matt and Gigi and everyone at Jamey Aebersold's place way down south in Indiana's true epicenter of Jazz, New Albany. We will proudly be attending our very first Indiana Music Educators Association Conference at the Convention Center in downtown Indianapolis on January 21-23. Their website is http://www.imeamusic.org/convention and we encourage everyone who can to look into attending this event, and those who do, please stop by booth 213 in the Exhibit Hall and say hi!

For those of you who like to keep up with new jazz releases, below are some items that you may wish to know about.

We once again thank everyone for your support - it is sincerely appreciated every day of the year!

FEATURED NEW BIG BAND ARRANGEMENTS:

JANUARY 2010 BIG BAND CHARTS
DECEMBER 2009 BIG BAND CHARTS

KO KO: SUPSERSAX
This may just be the most difficult Supersax arrangement. Recorded at a blistering 150 beats per half note (and even faster live in Japan), this chart is extremely difficult to pull off as-recorded. Part of the melody is shared with optional trumpet and trombone. In addition, the saxes are featured with just drums (no piano or bass) for a section of the arrangement. Included is an open solo section (this tune is based on the chord changes to 'Cherokee'). Good luck!
AFTER ALL: BILLY STRAYHORN
Here is Billy Strayhorn's famous arrangement of After All from the Essential Ellington Jazz at Lincoln Center Library series.
WORK SONG: MINGUS BIG BAND
Written in a medium-tempo, swing style, the saxes take the lead in the beginning answered by screaming brass figures. Soprano sax and a solo trombone engage in an ongoing bluesy dialogue interspersed with swingin' passages for the entire band. All masterfully arranged by Sy Johnson. Recorded live by the Mingus Big Band.
GG TRAIN: MINGUS BIG BAND
A study in contrasts, this dynamic chart features a blazingly fast swing tempo that alternates with sections in a very slow ballad style. The flexible solo section allows you customize this chart to fit the needs of your band. Recorded live by the Mingus Big Band.
