Wednesday April 6 marks the 84th anniversary of the birth of multi-talented jazz giant and Jazz Lines Publications favorite Gerry Mulligan. Gerry jammed with Charlie Parker as a teenager, was arranging for Gene Krupa and Claude Thornhill at 19, and forged a career with few parallels in the annals of jazz. A musician who was equally masterful at both writing and arranging, Mulligan also was one of the all-time best at his instrument, baritone sax; indeed, the DownBeat poll was his for three decades. Over his long career, he performed with Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, Lester Young, Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, Dave Brubeck, Billie Holliday, and a literal who's who on the genre's A-list. His work with Gil Evans and his contributions to the seminal Birth of the Cool sessions put him at the forefront of jazz innovation. During this period he was nicknamed 'Jeru' by Miles Davis, and it was a nickname Gerry was apparently very fond of. He continued to be a pace-setter by moving to California and pioneering the piano-less quartet. Mulligan maintained a very active career until his passing in 1996. We are honored to know and to work with Gerry's widow Franca. She tirelessly labors to keep Gerry's legacy at the forefront of the jazz world with the Gerry & Franca Mulligan Foundation, and she maintains the outstanding website www.gerrymulligan.com which is a wonderful place to learn more about this true giant of jazz.
Smithsonian Folkways Recordings, the record label of the national museum, recently released their brand new collection honoring the history of jazz. Jazz: The Smithsonian Anthology, is a nicely packaged 6-CD, 111 track set with an extensive booklet. This set updates and expands upon their 1973 Smithsonian Collection of Classic Jazz. The executive selection committee consisted of some of the leading jazz scholars in the nation: David Baker, Jose Bowen, John Edward Hasse, Dan Morgenstern and Alyn Shipton. Starting with King Oliver, Jelly Roll Morton, and other founding figures, the set moves through all of the major eras of jazz and concludes with some of today's greats, including Wynton Marsalis and Tomasz Stanko. This set is a marvelous introduction to much of the history of America's music, and it is also a great sampler of its most important contributors.
The Jazz Education Network has recently released all of the details for their Third Annual Conference. It will be held in Louisville, KY, on January 4-7, 2012. We strongly urge anyone interested in jazz to explore their website and to seriously consider attending this conference, which is THE jazz event of the year.
We once again thank everyone for your support - it is sincerely appreciated every day of the year!

SPRINGSVILLE: GIL EVANS/MILES DAVIS Springsville was composed in 1956 by John Carisi, who'd earlier written Israel for the Miles Davis Nonet in 1949. Carisi recorded Springsville for the RCA Jazz Workshop series, but the album was never released; it was also recorded that same year by Urbie Green for ABC-Paramount. Evans liked the tune well enough to make it the first track on 'Miles Ahead,' and it turns out to be the perfect opener for the album. Legend has it that Evans called Carisi years later and tell him how much he still loved the tune and the arrangement hed made for Davis. There is no question that it is a classic. This version utilizes the original manuscript score from that session. |
NIGHT TRAIN: ROY PHILLIPPE/COUNT BASIE Roy Phillippe composed this arrangement of Night Train for the Count Basie band to feature tenor saxophone legend Jimmy Forrest. The arrangement was filmed live for the Last of the Blue Devils movie. This chart is not difficult to play. Here is a great opportunity to feature your tenor sax player on a instantly recognizable song. |
COUSIN MARY: TERRY WHITE Here is a brand new arrangement of a John Coltrane classic. This medium easy chart is designed for young jazz ensemble, and is a great vehicle to introduce one of jazz's greatest composers. |
ORCHIDS AND BUTTERFLIES: SAMMY NESTICO Recorded on the SWR big Band CD Fun Time, this medium tempo ballad has an irresistible Latin beat. |

RANDY AND MICHAEL BRECKER: SOME SKUNK FUNK The Brecker Brothers join forces for a set of mostly high-powered originals at a concert on November 11, 2003. Their post-bop music is generally funky (although "Freefall" is an uptempo cooker) and is never predictable. Trumpeter Randy Brecker and tenor saxophonist Michael Brecker take many fiery solos while also sounding warm on ballads. They are supported by a particularly strong rhythm section. In addition, the WDR Big Band, conducted by Vince Mendoza, contributes 14 horns and a guitar to accompany the core group. The Breckers' solos are full of exciting moments. |
DUKE ELLINGTON: REMINISCING IN TEMPO Filmmaker Gary Keys crafts a compelling tribute to late jazz icon Duke Ellington in this companion piece to Keys' 1980 documentary Memories of Duke, which combines unseen clips captured during the famed pianist and bandleader's 1968 Mexican tour with footage and interviews shot at sister Ruth Ellington's annual birthday celebration. Ever since Duke's death in 1974 sister Ruth has hosted an annual gathering in which friends, family, and former bandmates all gather for a yearly birthday bull session. In addition to offering a closer look at the beloved jazz master, this lovingly-crafted documentary also features an original suite that was never commercially recorded. |
BUCK CLAYTON ALL STARS: LIVE IN BRUSSELS 1961 / LONDON 1965 This outstanding DVD contains two performances filmed in Europe during the early '60s. The first concert took place in Brussels and features Clayton conducting a small group including many well-known figures from the swing era, many of whom had also been part of the Basie band. Singer Jimmy Witherspoon is added on some numbers. The second show was taped in London and presents Clayton with trombonist Vic Dickenson and a big band conducted by English trumpeter Humphrey Lyttelton. Big Joe Williams sings the Kansas City blues on some of the tracks. |

PLAYING GUITAR IN JAZZ BAND Playing Guitar in Jazz Band is for beginning to intermediate guitarists who are interested in playing in a jazz big band. Playing this style of guitar can be challenging, as the chord changes are often complex, yet the guitar parts should remain simple enough to avoid detracting from the overall sound of the band. This book breaks down that process by substituting difficult chord shapes with more flexible voicings that are designed to sound good on the guitar. |

BLUESIER SIDE OF JAZZ Andrew Gordon's idea for this book is to create phrases or riffs over two measures of various blues progressions. He sub-divided each of the 12 bar blues progressions used in this book (the chord progression for Watermelon Man is a 16 measure progression) into six sections (two measures each) and within each of the six sections created four different phrases or riffs so that the student has a choice of four different phrases to play over every two measures. They can then create a solo based on which phrase they choose for each two measures. |
