Jazz Lines Publications' latest releases bring our catalog to 213 titles. We continue to be both enthused and humbled by the worldwide support and encouragement we are receiving. The recent collaboration with Oliver Nelson Jr. to publish his father's masterwork charts from the The Blues and the Abstract Truth joined our formal agreement with Frank Sinatra Enterprises as events which we place among our proudest moments. We take our mission most seriously as preservers and promoters of the greatest of American music, and it is at this time of year - when educators and bands the world over are preparing for the upcoming year - that we work our very hardest to continue to expand the catalog of accurate, legal, and readily available charts from the increasing roster of giants we work with and represent. Check right below in the Featured New Arrangements area for details on our latest, and please check back again soon, as upcoming releases will include Eddie Sauter's arrangements for Stan Getz's Focus, the remaining charts from Benny Carter's Central City Sketches, more from Frank Sinatra, and other exciting pieces as well.

Edward Lee Morgan was born in Philadelphia on July 10, 1938, a mere 73 years ago yesterday. Those who know us at ejazzlines know that Lee is among our very favorite musicians. He grew up in Philly, observing and learning from the amazing number of jazz greats who lived, worked, and came through that city in the 1950s, and the precocious Lee was playing with Dizzy Gillespie and Art Blakey while still in his teens. He led the first of what would be a long line of great Blue Note sessions in the fall of 1956 at age 18 and at age 19 joined Curtis Fuller as the 'kids' who stood next to John Coltrane in the horn line for Blue Train. Lee accomplished so much in his 33 years despite personal problems that it is impossible to list more than a sampling of it here. Sessions like Candy, The Sidewinder, Cornbread, Search for the New Land, The Procrastinator and others featured most of the hard/post bop era's greatest players at their best: Hank Mobley, Sonny Clark, Jackie McLean, Joe Henderson, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Grant Green, Ron Carter, Bobby Hutcherson, and so many more.

As the 1970s began, in addition to experimenting more with modality, Lee was also becoming more political and more involved in education and was making changes in his personal life; all of this seemed to signal what would be a new era for him. More great music to be sure, but he also was ready to take the role of a leader a la Jackie McLean - someone who would speak, teach, and lead as well as create music. An argument with his common-law wife which escalated into a shooting between sets at Slug's in New York ended Lee's life on February 19, 1972 at the tragically premature age of 33. Lee Morgan led dozens of sessions and was a sideman on many more. His leader sessions - especially as he matured in the 1960s - were characterized by an advanced sense of melody and a forerunning theme of funk. His records were joyous, hip, and rocking, and remain among the best of the classic Blue Note era. He lived far too few years, but his prolific nature resulted in a recorded legacy which leaves something for every jazz fan. In the tradition of the best leaders, Lee always let his great sidemen stretch out - he would bring fantastic compositions to the sessions, amass wonderful small groups, and give everyone the room to let their mastery come through. It is here - in the sound and vibe of his best leader sessions - that the true greatness of Lee Morgan shines like a beacon to see and hear for all eternity.

We once again thank everyone for your support - it is sincerely appreciated every day of the year!

SWINGIN' DOWN THE LANE: FRANK SINATRA/NELSON RIDDLE
Well, here is one of the most recognizable arrangements from the Sinatra/Riddle collaborations. This brilliant arrangement was recorded on the Songs for Swingin' Lovers album. This studio orchestra arrangement features a full big band with strings and harp. This is in the key of E, and, as such, the brass and reeds will need some time to adjust to the quantity of sharps and flats in the key signatures. This has been published from the original parts.
alt
ALL I NEED IS THE GIRL: FRANK SINATRA/BILLY MAY
Here is another great Billy May arrangement from the Sinatra/Ellington album, recorded in 1967. This nice swing chart features a solo for alto sax. Jazz Lines Publications is very proud to publish these tunes, making the music of a truly landmark and historic recording session available to the public for the first time. This has been engraved from the original parts: this is not a transcription.
alt
GET ME TO THE CHURCH ON TIME: FRANK SINATRA/BILLY BYERS
Billy Byers was commissioned by Quincy Jones in June of 1965 to write this arrangement for an upcoming tour Frank Sinatra was doing with the Count Basie Orchestra. It was written as an opener and originally included a 10-bar opening sequence that led to a vamp. In addition, there were a few cuts in the arrangement - we have included all the original music and have indicated what was cut so that you have the choice in what you wish to include for your performance.
alt
AVALON: TERRY GIBBS DREAM BAND/MED FLORY
This Med Flory arrangement was written for the Terry Gibbs Dream Band and was recorded in 1959. This was originally written to feature a tenor saxophone battle during an open solo section and Terry on vibraphone. We have included optional Bb or Eb solo parts so that it may be played with any featured soloist.
alt
PEOPLE TIME: BENNY CARTER
This gorgeous ballad was written by Benny Carter as part of his Central City Sketches suite (the 3rd movement). It was originally titled People and was written to feature flute (on alto 1) and trumpet. We have included an alternate alto 1 part that avoids the flute double. This is not difficult to play and is a great introduction to Benny's ballad writing.
alt
MELANCHOLY LULLABY: BENNY CARTER
Melancholy Lullaby was written in 1939 by Benny Carter and became his theme song. In the 1970s Benny revised his 1939 arrangement so that it featured a solo alto saxophonist along with a full big band. This is a very beautiful, late-night, show closer ballad. Brass are on cup mutes throughout. This arrangement was never recorded by Benny.
alt
DOOZY: BENNY CARTER
Here is the big band version of one of Benny Carter's best-known tunes. This arrangement was written for the American Jazz Orchestra in 1986 and features a solo for trumpet as well as a lengthy shout section.
alt
EASY MONEY: BENNY CARTER
Benny Carter originally composed and arranged this famous melody for the Count Basie band, who recorded it in 1961 (published by Sierra Music). In 1982 Benny revised his earlier arrangement to be used for concerts and master classes he was giving. In 1987 this arrangement was recorded by the American Jazz Orchestra. The melody remains largely the same as the 1961 chart and Benny considered this arrangement to be the definitive version of this song.
