MILES DAVIS: LIVE IN 1967
This Miles Davis-headlined performance film combines footage from two separate concerts with Davis on trumpet, Herbie Hancock on piano, Wayne Shorter on tenor sax, Tony Williams on drums, and Ron Carter on bass. One was mounted and filmed at Stadthalle, Karlsruhe, Germany, in November of '67, and the other at the Konserthuset in Stockholm, Sweden in October of '67.

MILES DAVIS: THE 1969 BERLIN CONCERT
A new DVD from the jazz great filmed at the Berlin Philharmonie on November 7th, 1969. This DVD comes from rare TV broadcasts, and is not up to the standards of DVDs produced in the 21st century. Nevertheless, it is still a valuable document of a classic Miles group containing a truly incredible lineup of virtuosos.

STAN GETZ QUARTET: LIVE IN COPENHAGEN 1987
According to discographies, the extraordinary quartet formed by the inimitable Stan Getz with Kenny Barron on piano, Rufus Reid on bass and Victor Lewis on drums would record together on one sole occasion: two sets performed at Copenhagen's Cafe Montmartre on the night of July 6, 1987. Fortunately, the first set was also filmed (material from the groups two LPs was mixed throughout the two sets) and is presented here for the first time ever on DVD.

JACO PASTORIUS: LIVE IN JAPAN AND CANADA 1982
This new DVD presents a wonderful portrait of Jaco still at his peak, in both a big band and a small group setting. The Word of Mouth Big Band was captured live in Tokyo on September 1, 1982, and his sextet was filmed live at the Montreal Jazz Festival on July 2 and 3, 1982. Jaco always was surrounded by great players, and these settings are no exception. Jon Faddis, Bob Mintzer, Randy Brecker, Peter Erskine, and Toots Thielemans are among the luminaries to share the stage with the bass giant on these two dates.

SLEEP: BENNY CARTER
Sleep (composed and published in 1923 by Earl Lebieg) was then known as the theme for Fred Waring and his Pennsylvanians; Waring began as a bandleader and eventually formed the top choral organization in the United States, with his own radio (and later television) show. Sleep was composed as a waltz, but in Carter's hands, it becomes an ensemble tour-de-force. Carter transforms Sleep into a challenging and exciting presentation that really puts a band through its paces. In our opinion, it is not only a masterpiece, but is one of the finest arrangements of a song in the history of the big bands.
|
CHARLIE'S OTHER AUNT: CHARLIE BARNET / MANNY ALBAM
Here is Manny Albam's great fast-swinging arrangement of Charlie's Other Aunt. This arrangement was written for 5 trumpets and 3 trombones. We have included an optional 4th trombone part that is an alternate for the 5th trumpet so that this may be played by a band with the standard instrumentation. This arrangement features solo spots for piano, tenor saxophone, trombone, and trumpets 2 and 5 (or trombone 4 instead of trumpet 5). For the recording 24 bars of the piano solo was omitted. We have put these bars back in to lengthen the piano solo to match Manny's original conception. This is a great Manny Albam arrangement that will really showcase the band for a festival or concert.

HEY THERE: BETTE MIDLER
Transcribed from the album 'Bette Midler Sings the Rosemary Clooney Songbook,' this chart was written by Adler and Ross for the musical 'The Pajama Game,' and was a huge hit for Rosemary Clooney.
|
TAKING A CHANCE ON LOVE: BENNY GOODMAN / FLETCHER HENDERSON
Taking a Chance on Love was written in 1940, and despite being a last minute inclusion for the Broadway musical 'Cabin in the Sky' it became the show's most enduring hit. Benny Goodman recorded this version in 1940, featuring the vocal of Helen Forrest. It was re-released in 1943 and charted for 14 weeks including 3 weeks at the number one spot.
