Hello again from ejazzlines!

We here at ejazzlines were very sad to note the recent and hopefully very temporary cessation of publication of the venerable and fantastic Jazz Times magazine. We have had a wonderful relationship with the folks at Jazz Times since our business started in 2001. Jazz Times and DownBeat have combined to be the main chroniclers of jazz for many years, and we do hope that this will continue to be the case as soon as possible, and that DownBeat will carry the torch until their brother and rival publication returns. According to their website, Jazz Times is apparently reorganizing and restructuring with the hopes of returning to the racks as soon as possible. We wish everyone there the very best and the quickest and most positive possible resolution of this troubling and disappointing development. The jazz world will not be the same without Jazz Times, and we look very forward to the next issue we will receive in our mailbox.

Special birthday wishes go out to the late and very great Eric Dolphy, who would have been just 81 last Saturday had he not passed so tragically in 1964. Eric accomplished so much and influenced so very many during his 36 years. Outward Bound and Out to Lunch are among our favorite albums, with the young Freddie Hubbard, Tony Williams, and Bobby Hutcherson among the many luminaries on these classic discs. Eric's legacy is among the widest and greatest in jazz, and ranges from his presence on Oliver Nelson's Blues and the Abstract Truth to his influencing rocker Frank Zappa. If you don't know Eric Dolphy, you certainly should.

ejazzlines is going to close for our annual summer vacation Friday July 3rd and we will re-open Monday July 13th, refreshed and rarin' to go, and ready with all of the new charts that we and our various suppliers will have to offer for the new school year. We will certainly be available via email and phone during this period, and as always, we will do our very best to respond to everyone's needs in as timely a fashion as possible.

For those of you who like to keep up with new jazz releases, below are some items that you may wish to know about.

We once again thank everyone for your support - it is sincerely appreciated every day of the year!

FEATURED NEW BIG BAND ARRANGEMENTS:

JUNE 2009 BIG BAND CHARTS
MAY 2009 BIG BAND CHARTS

MAMBO ITALIANO: BETTE MIDLER
This chart has been transcribed from the album 'Bette Midler Sings the Rosemary Clooney Songbook.' This arrangement packs a bit more punch than Ms. Clooney's original, and will be an almost guaranteed hit at any concert or dance. The rhythm parts are written out, though your players can lay down their own interpretations if preferred. The backing vocals have been scored into the sax parts, and if your players aren't comfortable singing they can simply play the notes instead. This is a high energy Latin chart, and a great addition to any library. The vocal key is Gm, modulating to Abm for the final chorus. The range is such that it is quite singable by most male singers too. There are no sax doubles.
MANHATTAN: ELLA FITZGERALD
Manhattan was recorded by Ella Fitzgerald in 1957, for the Verve album "Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Rodgers & Hart Songbook". The original Buddy Bregman arrangement was scored for strings, and woodwinds (flutes, oboes, clarinets), harp, tuned percussion and a rhythm section. This version uses the same counter-melodic lines as the original, but scored for a regular 5/4/4/4 big band instead, with the saxes and trombones taking most of the original string lines. The chart is very easy, with limited brass ranges (trumpets only up to G5, and trombones to F3). The rhythm parts are all written out, though your players can improvise their lines based on the given chords instead. Alto 1 doubles clarinet, though the part has a non-double option too, printed on the reverse. The vocal is "as sung" by Ella, in the key of Bb.
WRAPPIN' IT UP: BENNY GOODMAN
Wrappin' It Up is a very rare chart from the Benny Goodman book. Like many of his earlier hits, this is a Fletcher Henderson composition, and is up-tempo and delightfully bouncy. Great for the dancers. Goodman re-recorded this chart in 1951, and this later version has been transcribed for this publication. The beat is infectious, the riffs are tight, and all of the solos are written out in full, though your players can improvise from the chords provided if you prefer. The reeds are scored for CAATT, with all saxes written to double clarinets for a short 8 measure passage, though the tenors can avoid the double and play 8va if need be. The tenor solo is scored on both tenor parts. Whilst the trombone ranges are not too demanding (lead to Ab4), both trumpets 1 & 2 need to be able to hit Eb6.
GIANT STEPS: MARK TAYLOR
Here's a fresh new take on a traditional jazz standard. The style is still up-tempo swing, and the saxes maintain a fair share of the spotlight along with ensemble hits and solo spots for drums. However, there is a brief excursion into 5/4 and a few other meter surprises that help give this outstanding chart a contemporary edge.
