May 2011 Newsletter: A Package From Oliver Nelson, Jr. and an Increased Dedication to Education

Our postal carrier brought something very special to our offices on Friday. As many of you know, most of our Jazz Lines Publications arrangements use as source material the original music written by some of the genre's best arrangers and played by some of the 20th century's best bands. Often, we travel to the source to access these historic documents; this time, the documents came to us. We are working closely with Oliver Nelson, Jr. to make more of his legendary father's work readily available, and we have been fortunate enough to already publish six of the charts Oliver, Sr. did for the Thelonious Monk Big Band. This spring we plan to publish the septet charts from one of the greatest records in jazz history, Blues and the Abstract Truth.

Oliver, Jr. sent us the music last week, and handling (with extreme care!) the actual parts used by the musicians to record Stolen Moments was something akin to handling a jazz version of an original Magna Carta or Constitution. As serious students of both music and history, we were mesmerized to be holding the parts that Freddie Hubbard and Bill Evans used; seeing the handwritten thoughts of Eric Dolphy, Paul Chambers, and Roy Haynes was one of the great moments in ejazzlines history. We immediately put the CD on (for about the thousandth time) and listened to it with a newfound familiarity, being in the proximity of the actual music used to record it. These charts will be published in the coming month, and we also hope to have a very exciting announcement at some point later in the year about a possible concert honoring this seminal and timeless work a half-century after its initial release.

We take our responsibility as a prominent member of the jazz education community most seriously. Over the next few months we will redouble our already significant efforts to provide the very best selection of jazz-based as well as general music educational tools for musicians of all levels and styles. This month's new book pages especially will show the results of this increased effort. We have many newly-added books, among them older works which we had yet to list from jazz and general music education stalwarts Charles-Louis Hanon, Lee Evans, Bill Boyd, Bruce Forman, Russ Miller, Arnie Berle, and others. This will continue in the upcoming months, so that when the new fall school season approaches, our offerings will truly be better than ever.

We once again thank everyone for your support - it is sincerely appreciated every day of the year!

Rob and Doug at ejazzlines
