Oliver, Sy
Trumpeter Sy Oliver worked with several territory bands before becoming a member of the Jimmie Lunceford Orchestra in 1933. The arranger of several of Lunceford's biggest hits, Oliver was responsible for the shaping of the classic Lunceford two-beat feel: bouncy, light, and hard-swinging.
Oliver was eventually hired away by Tommy Dorsey in 1939. Although he largely stopped playing trumpet by this point, he continued to write some of the most popular arrangements of the Dorsey band's extensive catalogue, all while managing to update the band's sound to a more modern, upbeat sensibility.
Upon leaving the Dorsey organization, Oliver became the music director for Decca Records. He would organize and arrange sessions for such notables as Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra during this time period. He maintained a busy schedule for the rest of his life, even picking up trumpet again in the early 1980s for a brief time before his death in 1988.
