September 2010 Update Newsletter: A Bountiful Chart Selection and the Second JEN Conference

Jazz Lines Publications now has 133 titles in print, with many, many more great ones always on the way. The newest additions to the catalog are more classics from Med Flory's Supersax, Mary Lou Williams, and the Terry Gibbs Dream Band. We will continue our mission to restore, preserve and protect more and more key entries in the catalog of America's musical heritage, and please watch our monthly new release pages for more upcoming arrangements.

In addition to our own, we have a huge selection of new charts from across the music publishers' spectrum. Please see below for the highlights, and please also regularly check our new release pages, which will be updated on a nearly daily basis in the upcoming weeks.

Our friends at the Jazz Education Network are well into the planning and preparation for the second annual JEN Conference, which is being held in the most appropriate of cities, the cradle of jazz that is New Orleans. This year's gathering will be from January 6--8, 2011. We will have booths right next to our brothers-in-jazz at Jamey Aebersold, and among the others already committed to attending are Hal Leonard, Alfred, Pender's, Kendor, Advance, Chuck Sher, Downbeat Magazine, Yamaha, Conn-Selmer, Vandoren, and many others. The list of clinicians and performers is already incredibly impressive, and all of the information on what is being planned can be viewed at the conference page at the JEN website: http://www.jazzednet.org/en/2011_conference.

2010's conference was wonderful, and JEN is working so very hard to fill the void left by the demise of the IAJE Conference. Just like the IAJE event once was, the JEN Conference is a place where students, teachers, musicians, publishers, authors, instrument manufacturers, and jazz aficionados from all over the world come together. It is an event like no other, and for all who have the ability to attend, we implore you to consider it. You won't regret it.

We once again thank everyone for your support - it is sincerely appreciated every day of the year!

AU PRIVAVE: MED FLORY/SUPERSAX
Here is the Supersax version of 'Au Privave' as recorded on the 1988 'Stone Bird' record. Like the other Supersax arrangements that we publish this is not a transcription. The original, hand-written manuscript has been used to produce this arrangement. This is a very advanced chart exactly as-recorded by Supersax. An open solo section is included.
MARY'S IDEA: MARY LOU WILLIAMS/ANDY KIRK
Here is Mary Lou Williams's 1930 arrangement for the Andy Kirk band. All solos have been written out but we have also included chord changes in the event that your players wish to improvise.
SLEEP: MANNY ALBAM/TERRY GIBBS DREAM BAND
Here is a fast swing chart from Manny Albam, written in 1961 for the Terry Gibbs Dream Band album that was later released as 'The Big Cat.' This chart features solo spots for piano, vibraphone and trumpet 3. We have added an open solo section so that you may feature any number of soloists. In addition, we have added optional B flat and E flat solo parts so that this arrangement may be played with any guest soloist - not just a vibraphone soloist. We have published this arrangement from the original parts as supplied to us by Terry Gibbs.
ALL I DO IS DREAM OF YOU: MICHAEL BUBLE/CY PAYNE
Transcribed by Cy Payne from the album "Crazy Love" for full big band, with the opening key and modulations as recorded. Synth strings.
DJANGO: MIKE TOMARO
Feature vibes or piano on this terrific arrangement of the classic jazz standard by John Lewis. The solo section features a double-time swing section, and there is a sax soli as well. Great scoring for the entire ensemble!
LA FIESTA: MICHAEL PHILIP MOSSMAN
Here is a sizzling Afro-Cuban version of this Chick Corea classic that is sure to be an impressive addition to any program for mature bands. Perfect as a feature for your pianist, but the flexible solo section allows other players to be featured as well.

alt ELECTRIC HEART: DON ELLIS
Electric Heart tells the story of Don Ellis, a composer, an arranger, a bandleader, a trumpet player and Grammy-winner whose motto was "Experimentation before entertainment." This film tells his life story though testimonials from jazz giants such as the late Maynard Ferguson and Bulgarian pianist & composer, Milcho Leviev. Testimonials also include Pulitzer-winning composer Gunther Schuller and many of The Don Ellis Band members including Fred Selden & Sam Falzone. Ellis himself appears in a interview never seen by the public and in restored musical footage of the Monterey Jazz Festival '66, The Concord Jazz Festival '69 and a PBS special in San Francisco which all overwhelm the film with the diversity, the sheer electricity and the genius of Don Ellis.
alt BILL EVANS TRIO: LIVE IN UMBRIA 1978/HAMBURG 1972
This release presents two amazing performances by the great Bill Evans, for the first time on DVD. The first one was filmed in Italy in 1978, during Philly Joe Jones' final days as a member of the Bill Evans Trio. The Italian concert is believed to be among the last - if not THE last - time that Evans and Philly Joe played together. Lee Konitz also joins the group for one song, which is cut off by the ending of the TV broadcast. The second half of the DVD presents a rarity: a 1972 filmed rehearsal of the Bill Evans Trio, with Herb Geller joining the band. This was a rehearsal for an upcoming show, and it depicts Evans and Geller both playing and discussing what they would play. This rehearsal and the show shortly thereafter are believed to be the only instances of Evans and Geller playing together.
alt STEVEN BERNSTEIN: SOLOS - THE JAZZ SESSIONS
Steven Bernstein is a trumpeter/slide trumpeter, bandleader, arranger, and composer who lives outside of musical convention. In this intimate set of solo performances, Bernstein dedicates spontaneously improvised pieces to a variety of culture makers including Lenny Bruce, Sly Stone, Marianne Faithfull, Leonard Cohen, Donny Hathaway, Roswell Rudd, Sam Rivers, Dickie Wells, and Don Cherry.
alt KENNY G: LIVE AT MONTREUX 1987/88
Kenny G made his first appearance at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1987 on the back of his multi-platinum album "Duotones" and the hit single from it "Songbird," which was riding high in charts around the world as the festival got underway. The success of Kenny's first appearance led to an invitation to return the following year, when he included a track from his then yet to be released album "Silhouette" in the set. This DVD features the whole of the 1987 show and selected tracks from 1988 and captures Kenny G just as he was breaking through to global stardom.
alt LEARN TO PLAY FLAMENCO GUITAR
Aaron Gilmartin's intro to flamenco will get anyone started playing this passionate music. Along with flamenco history and terminology, Aaron teaches four of the most important forms: Tangos and Alegrias (on DVD 1) and Bulerias and Soleares (on DVD 2) - along with the strumming and picking techniques that make flamenco so exciting to players and listeners alike.
alt BLUES BY THE BAR
100+ cool riffs that sound great over each portion of the blues progression. The riffs are presented in two-measure chunks - organized by where they fall in the standard 12-bar progression - so you can enrich your blues vocabulary and assemble your own solos with authentic riffs and licks as played by 15 of the all-time great blues masters. Includes three jam tracks!

alt JAZZ IMPROVISATION FOR GUITAR
The purpose of this book is to explore the relationship between jazz harmony and improvisation by studying the vertical structures of chords and their function in a progression, and the horizontal or linear application of harmony to melodic improvisation. Each topic is accompanied by musical examples that are designed to help you hear the connection between harmony and melody and to develop a more melodic and creative way of thinking about improvising over chord progressions.
alt A RHYTHMIC TWIST
Can you learn how to swing? Yes, and this book will show you how, giving you a huge vocabulary of creative triplet grooves and fills to play in every style. The book does this by taking common, comfortable 16th-note patterns and adapting them into a triplet feel. The results are amazingly musical and refreshingly creative, and will give any drummer tons of new ideas to play within any swing-based groove.
alt CREATIVE JAZZ PIANO ARRANGING FOR REAL FAKE 'BOOK' TUNES
This instructional collection teaches how to create variations of simple melodies of many well-known standards as written in every Fake Book. Creative Jazz Piano Arranging provides a logical approach towards creating arrangements of simple well-known melodies. This powerful tool in developing performance excellence is one of the first steps toward becoming an incredible jazz pianist.
alt BRAZILIAN MUSIC FOR PIANO PART 2: SAMBA AND BOSSA NOVA
This book consists of twelve original piano pieces composed by the authors: six sambas and six bossas. The sambas themselves display a varied range of derived styles: samba-de-roda, sambão, partido alto, samba amaxixado, and also the "pure" samba, in two of the pieces. The pieces reflect the rich musical tradition of Brazil and serve as excellent solo piano pieces. Intermediate level.
alt LEARN FROM THE PIANO MASTERS OF POP, BLUES, AND JAZZ
This unique collection comes from original magazine sheet music from the heyday of the big bands. Bill Irwin shares his collection of music from legends of the genre (Art Tatum, Nat "King" Cole, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Erroll Garner, Fats Waller, Alec Templeton, etc.) as well as other lesser-known but influential pianists such as Milt Buckner, Buddy Cole, Pete Johnson, Mel Powell, Johnny Guarnieri, and more. Irwin includes an analysis of each piece, with musical insights to the style and techniques used. Anyone interested in playing big band styles and following the development of popular piano playing will be fascinated by this look back in time.
alt MAIDEN VOYAGE JAZZ SOLOS FOR ALTO, TENOR, SOPRANO, OR CLARINET
These two new books team up Grammy-winner Lennie Niehaus with the great jazz saxophonist and educator Greg Fishman for a set of exciting jazz solos written for the intermediate sax player. These 14 jazz solos were written to be played with Jamey's popular "Volume 54, Maiden Voyage" play-a-long (also available, catalog number V54DS) and, since they are by Lennie, you know they swing and are fun to play.
