Davis, Miles
One of the most important figures in jazz history, Miles Davis was born in East St. Louis, Illinois in 1926 to an upper middle class family. Moving to New York at age 18 to ostensibly study at Juilliard, Davis' true goal was to immerse himself in the burgeoning bebop movement. It was during this time that he became a member of Charlie Parker's quintet.
With his musical style being far more subdued and less flamboyant than bop icon Dizzy Gillespie, Davis was already looking to move away from bebop by the late 1940s. He eventually led a series of recording sides that were collectively dubbed the "Birth of the Cool" sessions, which took the harmonies and rhythms of bebop, but slowed them down and pacified them.
Davis' career was nearly ended before it truly took off due to severe drug addiction, but after kicking his habit in 1954 he returned to New York. A starring performance at the 1955 Newport Jazz Festival rocketed Davis to the forefront of the jazz world, organizing his first quintet shortly thereafter. 1959's "Kind Of Blue" served as the pinnacle of Davis' musical work during this time, and is considered by many to be the greatest jazz album of all time.
Beginning in 1964, Davis hired a new quintet of much younger musicians. This new band pushed the boundaries of the modal jazz ideas introduced on "Kind Of Blue" to their logical extremes. By the end of the 1960s, Davis' music had begun to wane in popularity. Motivated by the sounds of psychedelic rock, Davis shifted the sound of his music in a much more popular direction with 1970's "Bitches Brew." This new fusion of jazz and rock would come to define Davis' music until his abrupt retirement in 1975.
Returning to public performance in 1979, Davis' music took a much more pop-oriented turn in the 1980s. He would cover songs by Michael Jackson and Cyndi Lauper, and even almost collaborated with Prince on an album. By his passing in 1991, Davis could effectively claim that he had been the driving force in nearly every innovation in jazz since the early 1950s.
