Herman, Woody

One of jazz's most famous bandleaders, Woody Herman's 50 year career earned numerous critical accolades and popular success all over the world. Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1913, Herman was virtually destined for popular success. His parents encouraged his work as a vaudeville entertainer as a child. Herman focused his earliest efforts on singing and tap dancing before learning how to play the clarinet and saxophone as a teenager.

Herman formed his first band out of the remains of the Isham Jones Orchestra when Jones decided to hang up his professional career in order to profit off of the extensive collection of popular songs he had composed. Earning the nickname "The Band That Plays The Blues," Herman's outlet already had a distinct sound, culminating with its first big hit, 1939's "Woodchopper's Ball."

The 1940s saw Herman re-organize his band into the first of what would become known as the Thundering Herds. This band was one of the first big bands to openly embrace the sounds of the burgeoning bebop movement, even hiring a young Dizzy Gillespie to write a few arrangements. The personnel of the band during this stretch included such up-and-comers as tenor saxophonists Flip Phillips and trumpeter Pete Candoli.

Perhaps the most well-known and acclaimed version of Herman's orchestra was the "Four Brothers" band, named after an arrangement of the same name by Jimmy Giuffre. Unlike most other big bands, the saxophone section consisted of three tenors and one baritone, giving the ensemble a highly unique sound. Certainly helping the band's popularity was the fact that said saxophone section included heavyweights Stan Getz, Zoot Sims, Herbie Stewart and Serge Chaloff, all among the top soloists in the history of the instrument.

Herman was forced to continue touring for most of his later years due to significant tax debts acumulated throughout the 1960s. Despite this grueling performance schedule, Herman was able to become more involved in music education, frequently filling the ranks of his bands during the 1970s and 1980s with young talents that he had discovered as students. Herman would eventually hand over most of the bandleading duties to reedman Frank Tiberi in the mid-late 1980s due to failing health, eventually passing away in 1987.
