Montgomery, Wes

When it comes to jazz guitar, few have had the widespread level of impact as John Leslie “Wes” Montgomery. His brilliantly innovative improvisations and unorthodox technique have had a tremendous impact on guitarists of all musical backgrounds, and continues to be revered by musicians of all instruments to this day.

Born in Indianapolis in 1923, Montgomery came from a musical family (brothers Monk and Buddy would also go on to have notable careers). A relative latecomer to music, he began to teach himself how to play guitar at age 20. Within a few years, he had been hired by Lionel Hampton, with whom he briefly toured before returning to Indianapolis to be closer to his family.

After being heard by alto saxophone legend Julian “Cannonball” Adderley, Montgomery signed a contract with Riverside Records in 1959. It was his recordings for Riverside that turned him into a star virtually overnight. Frequently accompanied by some of the best backing bands around, Montgomery's deft technique and masterful knack for melody brought him widespread acclaim and notoriety.

The mid- to late-1960s saw Montgomery's popular success skyrocket. Several albums he made during this time period saw him being accompanied by big bands or even studio orchestras performing lushly arranged versions of more popular oriented material. Some of these recordings at times even hint at what would eventually become known as smooth jazz or “muzak.” Sadly, Montgomery would pass away from a heart attack in 1968. He left behind an extensive discography that continues to be revered by jazz fans the world over.
