Limtiaco, Matso

Jazz arranger/composer/baritonist Matso Limtiaco earned his early stripes as a university-level marching band arranger. After spending several years in music education, Matso left teaching and now works as an independent composer/arranger, with a "day job" as Principal Technical Writer for a technology company.

Matso has studied composition and arranging with Bill Smith, Greg Yasinitsky, and Charles Argersinger. When he joined the Emerald City Jazz Orchestra in 1994, he immediately started writing charts for the band, and today the book is almost exclusively made up of his arrangements. His charts can also be found in the libraries of the Jazz Police, Roadside Attraction, the Jim Cutler Jazz Orchestra, and many Seattle-area middle and high schools.

Matso is a charter member of bassist Steve Messick's quintet, the Endemic Ensemble, bringing his baritone and compositions (and occasional bass clarinet) to the group's unique sound. Their debut CD, "Lunar," was named one of the "20 Best Jazz Recordings of 2012" by Lucid Culture, a New York-based e-zine (lucidculture.wordpress.com).

More recently, Matso has been the baritonist and "co-curator" (along with drummer Greg Williamson) of the Boxley's Pro-Am Big Band, performing on the 3rd Thursday of every month at the Piccola Cellars in North Bend WA. He also performs (on fretless bass) with the North End Jazz Collective big band, based in Everett WA.
