200 INTRODUCTIONS

Artwork

Featuring Hank Jones, Oscar Peterson, Wynton Kelly, Sonny Clark, Bud Powell, and Tommy Flanagan

From the author Jon Nagourney: "This book, 200 Introductions, is designed for those musicians who wish to expand their knowledge of how to set the scene for a particular song. Most players know the standard turn-around progressions (I-VI-II-V), but the intros in this book are little gems that go much further than that.

The introductions were transcribed off records and CDs. The players represented are those who have spent years playing and have mastered the art of introductions. These players include Hank Jones, Oscar Peterson, Wynton Kelly, Sonny Clark, Kenny Barron, and more. These musicians are at the forefront of modern jazz. Players who use these intros will gain a wealth of information.

Since some of these intros come from ballads, they are sometimes played rubato (freely, out of time). We suggest that you use the original source recording as a basis for understanding the exact phrasing.

Some introductions may be a bit technically demanding. In those cases I recommend improvising over the chord progression first. That way you'll begin understanding these complicated harmonic structures before tackling the exact transcription."

Note: This book, designed for pianists, contains transcriptions of the right hand only, with chord changes printed above the staff. The left hand has not been included.
