Commissioned to celebrate Jeff Holmes' 25th anniversary at the University of Massachusetts. Straight eighths. This piece will challenge your rhythm section, as all melodic material is presented somewhere within the rhythm section. The melody unfolds gradually, beginning with the rhythm section alone. The saxes take over, followed by trombones, finally ending in a happy sounding tutti statement. A second, darker theme follows, which gives way to the first solo (tenor), teaturing shifting modes over a static pedal in the bass. The second soloist plays over increasingly frantic phrygian harmony. Some development takes us to a recap, this time with soaring melodic lines throughout the ensemble. Lengthy (10+ minutes.) Soloists: tenor sax, trumpet. Doubles: none. Med-difficult.
