Hello again from ejazzlines!

We refuse to let a raging blizzard keep us from our appointed rounds as we proudly present our Valentine's Day newsletter for all of the snowbound jazz-lovers out there! We are doing our best to ward off the biggest storm of the year with an especially hot selection of new DVDs. We have a brand new DVD by the great Eric Dolphy, and a wonderful new film on the Heath Brothers, presenting them live as well as in conversation with each other and many very interesting guests; this DVD was featured in last month's Jazz Times and is not to be missed. We also have the newest Rhapsody Films release, a double feature with Barry Harris and Mal Waldron, and Benny Golson and Curtis Fuller (neither of whom is often far from the ejazzlines office CD player) are live in performance on Benny's Whisper Not tour. Several classic View videos are now available on DVD, including features on Gil Evans, the Modern Jazz Quartet, and Billy Cobham with Louie Bellson. Among our new book offerings are a new release of a classic Buddy Rich drum text, complete with new DVDs, new books featuring the works of Michel Legrand, Bill Watrous, and Alex De Grassi, brand new mini versions of the first two Volumes of Hal Leonard's best-selling legal Real Books, and many other brand new and newly found books for everyone. We also have featured some great new CDs from all over the world!

In our ceasless effort to present all that is new and interesting, as of this newsletter we have added 63 new CDs for the month of February 2007 and 149 for the month of January 2007; 28 new DVDs for February 2007 and 31 for January 2007; 59 new music books for February 2007 and 63 for January 2007; 29 new big band arrangements for the months of February 2007 and 65 for the month of January 2007.

We maintain a special and regularly updated section on our site dedicated to the imports and hard to find CDs that we stock. You may want to bookmark our Imports and Rarities section. You can find this link on the top of our homepage and left-hand margin of each page. These pages don't list everything we have in stock, but present a healthy selection of titles that you may not already be familiar with.

In our DVD section, we now carry more than 1,275 jazz DVDs!

As always, please keep in mind that many of our new releases are available in limited quantities. We do our best to predict demand and fill orders as quickly as possible, but we do run out of new releases. Even if we run out of stock, everything featured in this newsletter should be available to ship within 3 weeks. If you need something before a particular date for the holidays, please email us ahead of time to ensure availability.

We thank you all again very sincerely for your continued support, and we look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at the Music Library Conference in sunny Pittsburgh in 2 weeks!

FEATURED NEW DVDs:

alt ERIC DOLPHY LIVE IN STOCKHOLM 1964 AND ANTIBES 1960
This new DVD featuring reed-master Eric Dolphy showcases his work with the Charles Mingus Sextet. The first portion of the DVD is a Mingus band rehearsal and has two different takes of 'So Long Eric.' For the rehearsal's third and final tune, the band begins playing Mingus' composition, 'Meditations.' A brief false start there is a short conversation between Mingus and Dolphy. The bassist can be heard here asking Dolphy what he is planning to do after the tour. Sadly, Eric Dolphy died in Berlin from undiagnosed diabetes on June 29 of that same year. Following their brief chat, the group performs a nearly 20-minute extended version of 'Meditations.' The second part of this DVD is a segment from a 1960 Mingus band concert in Antibes. A long interpretation of 'I'll Remember April' is presented featuring Booker Ervin and the exceptional pianist Bud Powell (Powell was among the audience during the concert and sat in for this one song).
alt BROTHERLY JAZZ: THE HEATH BROTHERS
The 70-minute film's centerpiece is a July 2004 concert held at Coventry Grove, a 300-seat amphitheater at producer Danny Scher's Kensington, California home. The occasion was a fund-raiser for Berkeley's Jazz School, but Scher immediately saw the musical and historical significance of the evening, which turned out to be one of the last times the brothers shared a stage before Percy's death in April 2005. Interviewees include the Heath brothers as well as Sonny Rollins, Herbie Hancock, Taj Mahal, Jack DeJohnette, Christian McBride, Marian McPartland, George Wein, Orrin Keepnews, and newsman Peter Jennings - a close friend of Percy's.
alt BARRY HARRIS: PASSING IT ON / A PORTRAIT OF MAL WALDRON
This is a double-feature. BARRY HARRIS: PASSING IT ON: "This short film reveals an aspect of the jazz pianist Barry Harris that most of listeners rarely see or are even aware of...He is a teacher and an advocate... to whom 'be-bop is the beginning and end of music.' But he is open to all music...This is a billiant cameo of a provocative and charming person." A PORTRAIT OF MAL WALDRON: This film examines the life and contributions of legendary pianist Mal Waldron. In addition to boasting a recording career featuring many influential records under his own name, he has been a composer for film, accompanist to some of the most important jazz musicians and singers and an activist leader. This engaging film also features footage of Max Roach, Steve Lacy, Jeanne Lee, Andrew Cyrille, and Reggie Workman.
alt BENNY GOLSON: THE WHISPER NOT TOUR
This DVD features far more than just the genius of Golson. Performing alongside Benny in this timeless, un-cut concert is a plethora of talent; Art Farmer, in his last live recorded video performance with Golson & Curtis Fuller (original members of the historic Jazztet), as well as the legendary vocalist Jon Hendricks and a rhythm section of Geoff Keezer, Dwayne Burno and Joe Farnsworth.
alt BUDDY RICH'S MODERN INTERPRETATION OF SNARE DRUM RUDIMENTS
When Buddy Rich's Modern Interpretation of Snare Drum Rudiments was first published in 1942 it became an instant classic: the world-class drum method from the world's greatest drummer. Written by Rich and his distinguished collaborator Henry Adler, the book has been virtually the drummer's bible ever since. DVD I includes demonstrations of all the basic lessons and rudiments. The lessons are played in non-bounce matched-grip technique, and in bounce traditional-grip technique. DVD 2 includes live footage of Buddy Rich, plus an exclusive interview with daughter and grandson, Cathy and Nick Rich.
alt 40 YEARS OF MJQ
From their roots as the rhythm section in Dizzy Gillespie's immortal big band, the MJQ helped bring respectability to Jazz by interacting with classical ensembles and playing concerts at prestigious venues, but always leaving plenty of space for bluesy and swinging improvising. Now on DVD, MJQ is still swinging in this 40th Anniversary Concert celebration showcasing the signature sounds that have assured their lasting legacy: from the echoes of the classical European tradition to the inspiration of classical jazz.
alt COBHAM MEETS BELLSON
All-star drummers Billy Cobham and Louis Bellson face off and alternate in virtuosity using a myriad of tones from the whispering to the fortissimo. Live from Switzerland, this exclusive performance on DVD is a continuous flow of rhythmic bravado, punctuated by the Louis Bellson Big Band. The duos provoke hypnotic and contagious movement that is sure to keep your foot tapping.
alt MEL LEWIS AND HIS BIG BAND
In this exclusive, live DVD concert performance, Grammy award winner Mel Lewis leads his top-flight 19-piece band with Joe Lovano, Dick Oatts, Gary Smulyan and Ralph Lalama. Song selections include 'Little Pixie,' 'I'm Getting Sentimental Over You,' 'I Get A Kick Over You,' 'I Wanna Be Happy' and 'Ding Dong Ding.'
