Hello again from ejazzlines! As we are now well into the fall semester of school, please accept our sincere gratitude for helping to make these last few months a very busy time here at ejazzlines. As always, we tremendously value our customers who are bandleaders, teachers, professors, and musicians, and we truly appreciate the generosity you have shown us this year. We pledge to continue working to provide the very best selection of jazz arrangements, books, and DVDs available anywhere.
Jazz Lines Publications, now with 139 charts in print, will continue to publish the best in classic charts, with more on the way from Mary Lou Williams (Camel Hop as arranged for Benny Goodman), Charlie Parker With Strings (Laura, They Can't Take That Away From Me, Summertime, What Is This Thing Called Love, and Repetition), and other great arrangers.
We already had a fine selection of arrangements from the pen of one of today's hottest arrangers, Gordon Goodwin, whose charts are offered by several leading publishers. We are happy to now offer 20 more of his works, all from our good friends at Walrus Publications. We now have 106 Goodwin titles! Please check out October Charts pages for these exciting new choices.
Yesterday marked the 49th birthday of one of the true giants of the music world. Despite his relative youth, it seems as though Wynton Marsalis has been around forever. He strides and swings like a colossus over the worlds of jazz and classical music, with a peerless legacy as a player, performer, and educator. Bringing classic works to life as the leader of Jazz at Lincoln Center is among the many avenues he employs to bring America's greatest music to more and more people every year. In addition to his huge public persona and constant presence in the media, Wynton is also a phenomenal trumpeter. He has chops which rank him among the all-time greats. If one is more familiar with his name and media presence than with his actual music, we encourage you to listen to discs like Black Codes or J Mood. Wynton is outspoken, and is famous in many realms, but when one simply hears his incredible jazz trumpet playing, one quickly realizes why he initially became so well-known. The man can play jazz like few others. We salute him this week, as few do more to bring jazz to youth than Mr. Marsalis.
We once again thank everyone for your support - it is sincerely appreciated every day of the year!

|
WHISPER NOT: AL COHN/QUINCY JONES This Al Cohn arrangement was written for Quincy Jones in 1959 and recorded for his album 'The Birth of a Band.' Cohn's original arrangement was written to feature a B flat soloist (possibly Benny Golson, who was in Quincy's band) but it was modified in the studio so that the melody is played both within and across sections throughout the chart. We have kept these changes but left Al's original shout chorus as-written. The chart features a trumpet duet as well as a tenor-trumpet duet. There are no saxophone doubles. |
NUTCRACKER SUITE: BILLY STRAYHORN AND DUKE ELLINGTON We just wanted to let everyone know that we do have this magnificent recent release in stock and ready to go. This new, authentic edition of Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite as arranged in 1960 by Billy Strayhorn and Duke Ellington was assembled from the original manuscripts held in the Strayhorn Repository and the Ellington Collection of the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History. For purposes of accuracy, the manuscripts were cross-checked carefully with the original Duke Ellington Orchestra recording. |
MEET THE FLINTSTONES: DAVE BARDUHN This classic TV tune, which everyone knows and loves, is now available as a Professional Edition from Hal Leonard, arranged by Dave Barduhn. |
THAD SAID NO: GORDON GOODWIN As recorded by Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band (on "XXL" from Silverline Records) featuring Eddie Daniels on clarinet, this rollicking swing tune commemorates legendary composer Thad Jones' dislike of clarinet solos. There is plenty of room for your clarinet (or soprano sax) to stretch out and exchange phrases with each section. After a climatic shout chorus, your soloist gets an open cadenza (in which he may attempt to change Thad's mind) and all come together for the exciting conclusion. If you have a strong soloist in the front row, this chart will bring down the house! |

DEVELOP SIGHT READING: VOLUMES 1 AND 2 COMPLETE Develop Sight Reading complete, Volumes 1 and 2, is an established sight-reading method for all musicians. Technical in nature, it is indispensable for it stimulates, coordinates and stabilizes one's mental and physical reflexes. The studies are arranged in order of difficulty and designed to develop in the player a facility for dealing - at sight- with chromatic, intervallic, rhythmic and metric complexities. Volume 1 is on an intermediate level, while Volume 2 is advanced. Many of the studies are annotated by the author to aid the player in dealing with this musical but challenging material. Two of this century's most respected orchestral artists/soloists/teachers, Gaston Dufresne and Roger Voisin, are credited with this work. Available in treble clef and bass clef editions. |

These lyrical melodies are unique in the industry. The CD is recorded in a play-along fashion with the duet being played in entirety (both parts) if your stereo is evenly balanced.
