March 2011 Newsletter: The Benny Carter Jazz Festival and Happy Birthday Wes!

The Benny Carter Jazz Festival was a major success. We traveled to Scranton, Pennsylvania, and were pleased and honored to spend some time with Phil Woods, Benny's widow Hilma, Ed Berger, and Tom Heinze, the event organizer. The gracious Mrs. Carter treated us to some priceless stories about life with one of the true giants of jazz. She made us feel proud to have the responsibility of being guardians of Benny's music. We will release more of his work over the coming months, and intend to continue to make his music available for playing and study forever. Phil Woods sat in with the student band for a few tunes, and at age 79 retains all of the presence and taste that his playing has always had. His command of the instrument is so complete yet so natural - when he begins playing, one is instantly reminded of what a true virtuoso sounds like; the alto sax seems to be an extension of Phil Woods' soul. We thank friend of ejazzlines Tom Heinze for his endless labors on behalf of making this event possible; the crowd filled with students and fans was thrilled to hear this timeless music performed.

Sunday March 6 would have been Wes Montgomery's 88th birthday. Wes may be ejazzlines' favorite jazz guitarist, and if you don't know him, you should. Wes did not read music, had little knowledge of theory, and played without a pick - all of this combined with his obvious innate musical brilliance to create an instantly recognizable and truly unique and beautiful sound. Cited as an influence by everyone from Joe Pass to Jimi Hendrix to Stevie Ray Vaughan, Wes Montgomery is truly one of jazz's great - and heartbreaking - stories. Working full-time to support a large family while playing clubs at night, he did not begin regularly recording until he was in his mid-30s. He recorded prolifically throughout the 1960s, and began to see much commercial success towards the latter part of the decade, but was struck by a fatal heart attack at the tragically young age of 43. A good place to start listening to Wes would be The Incredible Jazz Guitar of Wes Montgomery, or the album which Pat Metheny has said taught him to play jazz guitar, Smokin' at the Half Note. Jazz Lines Publications is very excited to announce that we are now publishing some charts from two of his big band albums. Arrangements are by Oliver Nelson and Johnny Pate.

We once again thank everyone for your support - it is sincerely appreciated every day of the year!

TWISTED BLUES: WES MONTGOMERY/OLIVER NELSON
This Oliver Nelson arrangement was written for Wes Montgomery's 'Goin' Out of My Head' album of 1965. This is a great guitar showcase and features some very nice supporting ensemble passages. Trumpet 1 gets very high throughout (see the range below). There is an open guitar solo section.
alt
NAPTOWN BLUES: WES MONTGOMERY/OLIVER NELSON
This Oliver Nelson arrangement was written for Wes Montgomery's 'Goin' Out of My Head' album of 1965. This is a great guitar showcase and features some very nice supporting ensemble passages. Trumpet 1 gets very high throughout (see the range below). There is an open guitar solo section. This would make a great festival piece to show off your guitarist.
alt
MOVIN' WES (PART II): WES MONTGOMERY/JOHNNY PATE
This arrangement by Johnny Pate was recorded by Wes Montgomery on his 1964 Verve album 'Movin' Wes.' This is a pretty easy arrangement for the ensemble, but you need to have a capable guitarist. For most of this arrangement the guitar is featured. The tuba part may be played by a bass trombone.
alt
BILLIE'S BOUNCE: TERRY GIBBS DREAM BAND/BILL HOLMAN
This Bill Holman arrangement was written for the Terry Gibbs Dream Band and was recorded in 1962 and released on the Big Cat album. This was originally written to feature Terry on vibraphone but we have adapted the arrangement to feature any C, Bb or Eb soloist.

CHEEK TO CHEEK: ELLA FITZGERALD/PAUL WESTON
Cheek to Cheek is a transcription of the original Paul Weston chart, as recorded on Ella's "Irving Berlin Songbook" album. The pace is easy, and Ella's vocal interpretation is sublime. The vocal part is written "as sung" by her. The band backings are relaxed, yet punchy, and support the vocalist perfectly. We have written the delightful muted trumpet solo for the second part and recommend that your player plays it "as written", rather than faking a jazz solo, as the original is totally in keeping with the feel of the chart. There are no sax doubles and the vocal key is F throughout.

GET HAPPY: ELLA FITZGERALD/BILLY MAY
Taken from Ella's "Harold Arlen Songbook" album, this transcription of Billy May's original arrangement is a snarling swing chart, balancing punch and up-tempo power with soulful gospel interludes. The tempo alternates between 200 and 70 beats per minute in the opening 32 measures before settling on 200 for the remainder of the chart, and we have scored the sax solo onto the alto 1 part. The original solo is written out, though your player can improvise from the chords provided, if preferred. The brass ranges are quite high, with lead trumpet to Eb and lead bone to C.

BAUBLES, BANGLES, AND BEADS: TITO PUENTE
Here is another very straight-ahead Latin (Cha Cha) version of Baubles, Bangles & Beads, as played by Tito Puente and his Orchestra. It is an ensemble chart from start to end, and very dancable. The arrangement is straightforward to play, though the brass need crisp technique to keep the cross rhythms tight when countering the reeds near the end of the chart. There are no sax doubles.

FLYING HOME: TED HEATH
Written by Benny Goodman and Lionel Hampton, this tune was a mainstay of the Goodman Sextet, featuring Charlie Christian. The version that we offer you here is transcribed from the Ted Heath album "Swing is King", recorded in 1968, and it swings really hard and fast from start to finish. Because of the tempo, the unison sax lines and the high range of the trumpet solo we have graded the chart at the advanced level. This chart is classic Ted Heath.
