Hello again from ejazzlines!

We hope everyone in the U.S. had a wonderful Thanksgiving week, and we just wanted to drop by to say hello and make everyone aware of the many new items which have beefed up our November offerings. We also would like to give everyone yet another reminder of the approaching season of giving. We will be back again in about two weeks with our December/Holiday Newsletter, which will feature many items we will have available for the last-minute holiday shopper.

Although we have mentioned them before, we again suggest the Jazz Icons series 1 and 2 DVDs as perhaps the very best holiday gift we can offer. These DVDs feature giants of jazz for music fans of all levels of dedication, ranging from mainstream legends like Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, and Ella Fitzgerald, to legends loved by fans of all genres of jazz such as Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane, to all-time staples of the hardcore jazz fans like Charles Mingus and the great Wes Montgomery. There are 16 individual volumes, and two box sets, and every one of these DVDs is packaged with vintage photos and extremely informative liner notes by some of the greatest and most knowledgeable writers the music knows, ranging from our good friend Michael Cuscuna, to family members of the musicians themselves. We could not recommend anything more sincerely than these wonderful DVDs.

NEW DVDs:

December's DVDs most certainly are topped by the long-awaited release of Pat Martino's classic videos, both on one DVD, Creative Force Complete. This DVD has personalized instruction from one of the giants of jazz guitar, as well as performance footage, and is perfect for the guitarist who is looking to move his or her playing to the next level. Our friend and colleague Bruce Ricker of Rhapsody Films teamed with Clint Eastwood to produce a new documentary on the timeless and ageless legend Tony Bennett titled The Music Never Ends. The DVD traces Tony's decades of success and also features a live performance from the 2005 Monterey Jazz Festival. Other new and noteworthy releases include the Art of Playing With Brushes, a tour-de-force for drummers of all levels and styles; Contemporary Guitar Greats, a new Mel Bay DVD featuring many of today's hottest jazz guitarists; a brand new Jack Grassel guitar instruction DVD from Hal Leonard; and a rarity for fans of Latin jazz, a DVD featuring interviews and live performances from a true original, Mongo Santamaria.

NEW CDs:

Well, for a couple of newsletters we've wanted to mention another new Beverly Kenney find Lonely and Blue, but as soon as we get more in from Japan they are gone from the shelf in a matter of minutes. So, we wanted to quietly (sshh!) say that we'll be getting more back in stock within 2 to 3 weeks. Vocalist Roberta Gambarini and Hank Jones teamed up on a new release out of Japan titled Lush Life that features a nice blend of standards. For those of you who missed out on the first release of Jutta Hipp at the Hickory House, both volumes have been re-released (and remastered). Veteran tenor saxophonist Ted Brown has a new release on SteepleChase titled Shades of Brown that features bassist Dennis Irwin and guitarist Steve Lamattina. Also from SteepleChase comes a new recording from saxophonist Andrew Rathbun titled Affairs of State with Gary Versace and Taylor Haskins.

NEW BOOKS AND PLAY-ALONGS:

Jamey Aebersold has just published their newest play-along, Volume 119, featuring the alto sax great and ex-Jazz Messenger Bobby Watson. They also recently released a book of Ron Carter bass solos. We are happy to note that Chuck Sher has made his European Real Book available in B flat and E flat editions. Jim Bastian has just sent us the first batch of his latest, How to Play Advanced Chordal Bebop Lines for Guitar, which should be a perfect companion to the first volume. In the holiday spirit, we have books of Christmas standards for male and female singers, and we again point out Alfred Publishing's excellent new holiday play-along series, Christmas Instrumental Solos, available in 11 editions for just about any instrument.

NEW BIG BAND ARRANGEMENTS:

We are very proud to announce the publication of three more big band charts in our own catalog (Jazz Lines Publications), the classic New Year's Eve arrangement of Auld Lang Syne as recorded by Guy Lombardo (just in time for the holiday); I Won't Dance arranged by Neal Hefti, and recorded by Frank Sinatra and Count Basie (Sinatra-Basie, 1962); and Who Cares, arranged by Marion Evans and recorded by Helen O'Connell.

Countless millions have welcomed in the new year with Guy Lombardo's famous arrangement of Auld Lang Syne over the last half-century, and we now make it available to you, and very enthusiastically! We also recommend our first published chart, Star Eyes, which was arranged by Hal Mooney and performed by Helen O'Connell in the 1970s.

This week we just released Neal Hefti's I Won't Dance (as recorded by Frank Sinatra on the 1962 record 'Sinatra/Basie'). This is a swinging and playful arrangement that features flute. Lastly, we have the barn-burner Who Cares (arranged by Marion Evans, as recorded by Helen O'Connell on her recording 'Here's Helen'). This moves along at 240 bpm and features some great ensemble shout passages.

Back to Sinatra, we will have the classic 'How About You' (adapted from the Nelson Riddle arrangement recorded by Frank Sinatra on 'Songs for Swingin' Lovers') arrangement available within the next few weeks - perhaps as early as next week.

Some other new arrangements to consider include Snowfall as recorded by Claude Thornhill; the classic Johnny Mercer tune Dream arranged by Al Cobine; Dean Martin's version of Bye, Bye Blackbird; and Bobby Darin's reading of Call Me Irresponsible.

As you get the music together for your winter concerts, we would like to offer a selection of our best-selling Christmas/holiday big band arrangements: Santa Baby (as recorded by Eartha Kitt); Home for the Holidays (male/female duet); Here Comes Santa Claus/Santa Claus Is Coming to Town (as recorded by Linda Eder); Jingle Bells (as recorded by the Andrews Sisters); Baby, It's Cold Outside (as recorded by Margaret Whiting and Johnny Mercer); O Holy Night (as recorded by Stan Kenton); You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch; and Christmas Time Is Here. Please see the Holiday Section of our site for a complete list of titles.
