Hello again from ejazzlines!
Hi again, and welcome to our mid-May update newsletter. Educational releases highlight our new items over the last few weeks, and we do hope that everyone is planning to use their spare time this summer to do some woodshedding!
If so, we have quite a few books and DVDs which will help just about everyone, regardless of instrument or skill level.
While we continue to mourn IAJE's passing, we are encouraged that the folks at Jazz Improv are working hard to plan their 2nd annual convention in New York City, and we hear that it is going to be even bigger and better than last year's.
This time it is most likely going to be in January, and we will keep everyone posted as soon as new information is available.
One other item we would like to mention is that ejazzlines will be taking our semi-annual vacation during the first week of June.
We will be keeping in touch via email, but we will not be doing any shipping from our facility from Monday June 2 through Monday June 9.
We will be checking email and voicemail, so if anyone needs an emergency drop-ship, this is something that may be possible. We appreciate everyone's flexibility,
and should you need something that week, please do contact us, and we will do our very best to be in touch and take care of things as soon as possible.
Finally, we would once again like to mention the incredible new World of Maynard Ferguson DVD. This unique release of a long-unavailable program of Maynard and his band was
pressed in a very limited edition of 1500 copies worldwide, and we just received another small batch of them. We are not sure how long the limited supply will hold out,
but we do have it here to ship as this is being written!
New DVDs:
We have added several new gems since we last were in touch. First and foremost are brand new live DVDs from Stanley Jordan and Chris Barber.
We also have two new ones featuring classic performances from the great Satchmo - Louis Armstrong live in Australia in 1964 with a small group, and a phenomenal compilation DVD of great performances
of his from the 1930s right through the 1960s. We also have added quite a few new instructional DVDs, led off by a master class from drummer Antonio Sanchez.
Finally, we again call your attention to two of the best items from earlier in the month, the four volume Learn to Play Blues Piano DVDs, and the documentary on the golden age of Cuban Music, We Are the Music.
New CDs:
Our May CD offerings begin with some re-issues from Fresh Sound. Recorded in Los Angeles in 1957, Herbie Mann led a group known as the Californians that featured trumpeter Jack Sheldon, pianist Jimmy Rowles, bassist Buddy Clark and
drummer Mel Lewis. Titled Great Ideas of Western Mann, this session has 11 tunes including several standards. Also
newly released by Herbie Mann is 1957's Yardbird Suite featuring Phil Woods, Eddie Costa and Joe Puma. Valve trombonist Bob Brookmeyer led a 1954
recording session called The Modernity of Bob Brookmeyer that featured pianists Jimmy Rowles and John Williams. Lastly,
Jazz Sahib is a collection of Sahib Shahib sextet sessions recorded for Savoy and Epic records in 1956 and 1957.
This 2-CD set features Benny Golson, Hank Jones, Bill Evans, and Phil Woods.
New Big Band Arrangements:
We are proud to announce the release of the latest Jazz Lines Publication: Just Friends by Rob McConnell. This tour-de-force arrangement from McConnell's 1981 album 'Big Band Jazz, Vol. 1'
on Pausa Records moves along at 224 bpm and is really designed for the cream of the professional bands. In addition to the tempo, there is a long sax soli and ensemble sections without the rhythm section. The chart features solos for tenor saxophone, trombone, trumpet, and alto saxophone.
The ranges are very high for trumpet and trombone and it is scored for 5 trumpets and 5 trombones; however, the chart can be played with 4 trumpets and 4 trombones. We have used the original manuscript to generate this arrangement - it is not a transcription. In addition,
we have a few new vocal charts: Natalie Cole's This Can't Be Love, Ella Fitzgerald's Don't Be That Way,
and June Christy's Tampico as recorded with Stan Kenton.
New Books:
May's books feature a huge selection of great items. We are perhaps proudest of two of Mel Bay's newest, Anyone Can Improvise by Matt Dennis,
and Sal Salvador's Complete Book of Guitar Technique - two tutorials from masters of their instruments.
We are also carrying the new book The Music Lesson,
the first novel from bassist extraordinaire and all-around Renaissance Man Victor Wooten. Jamey Aebersold has made us aware of the Jazz Piano Collection,
a book for soloists with a wonderful songlist. We are happy to offer a new book for trombonists, Trombone Fundamentals.
There are quite a few new Hal Leonard play- and sing-alongs we have just added, and we also would like to again mention Alfred's excellent new series from earlier in the month, Jazz Standards for Vocalists, available for ten instruments,
as well as in a complete set.

In our DVD section, we now carry nearly 1,650 jazz DVDs!
As always, please keep in mind that many of our new releases are available in limited quantities. We do our best to predict demand and fill orders as quickly as possible, but we do run out of new releases. Even if we run out of stock,
