Hello again from ejazzlines!

Happy Autumn to all! It's hard to believe but here we are in mid-October - the year is flying by. As we keep an eye on the calendar and its eventual movement toward December, we want to make sure we mention that the Christmas/holiday books have started rolling in. I guess the thought is that if you're going to play at your holiday party you had better get to practicing the music. And, if your big band will be doing some holiday concerts your players will want ample time to learn the parts. In addition to the holiday materials, we do have some nice CDs and DVDs that bear mentioning as well as the newly released Paul Anka charts from the 'Rock Swings' album.

We also once again encourage everyone in range of New York City to look into attending the first Jazz Improv Convention at the New Yorker Hotel on October 25-28. The lineup of musicians appearing is truly impressive. Plus, if you want a chance to meet us we'll be there also!

NEW DVDs:
We are proud to present Allan Holdsworth's first instructional DVD! In this film, Allan breaks down his creative use of scales and chord voicings and offers insightful suggestions as to how to go about creating your own unique sounds and chord voicings. While we're talking about guitarists, there is a new Frank Gambale DVD: Acoustic Improvisation. After blowing through seven jaw-dropping performances with his world-class band, Gambale sits down for a candid one-on-one session about jazz improvisation. Finally, we'd like to present John McLaughlin's new DVD Gateway to Rhythm. McLaughlin and Selvaganesh Vinayakram discuss the Konokol system (mastering rhythm without drums) and how it can be applied to all instrumentalists and vocalists. From watching this DVD you'll move from basic understanding of rhythm into the wonderful world of improvisation.

NEW CDs:
We just got in the newest recording from Lage Lund, the 2005 winner of the Monk Jazz Guitar Competition. His newest trio CD is titled Standards, and not surprisingly, it features a nice collection of well-known tunes including: Darn That Dream, That Old Feeling, Turn Out The Stars, and more. We also just received a welcome reissue of Nathan Davis' 1965 French session with Woody Shaw titled Peace Treaty. In addition to Davis and Shaw, the date has pianist Rene Urtreger, bassist Jimmy Woode, and drummer Kenny Clarke. Verve Records has a new series of remastered recordings - these classics sound better than ever! Some of the more noteworthy titles in the series are: Oliver Nelson's Blues and the Abstract Truth, Duke Ellington Meets Coleman Hawkins, Johnny Hartman's I Just Dropped By to Say Hello, and Sonny Rollins on Impulse. We also just re-stocked quite a bit of the M&I catalog. For those of you who want to plan ahead, we have a couple of CDs coming in from Japan later this month: Beverly Kenney Lonely and Blue and another new Harry Allen CD Down for the Count. These are in 'pre-order' mode - we will ship them as soon as we receive them from Japan.

NEW BOOKS AND PLAY-ALONGS:
In preparation for the approaching holiday season, we do already have several new Christmas books available for various instruments as well. Cool Shades of Christmas is a cool collection of 11 Christmas songs given a distinctive jazzy treatment by Jay Rouse. Titles include: Angels We Have Heard on High; Cool Shades; December; Go, Tell It on the Mountain; Joy to the World; The Holly and the Ivy; What Child Is This; and more. Tom Fettke also has a new holiday collection out titled Heart of Christmas. This book features 12 inspirational carol medleys featuring dynamic blends of traditional Christmas favorites alongside rich, lesser-known Christmas songs. And from the 'Play with the CD Series' comes Christmas Carols. This book/CD set has 10 great Christmas carols that you can play-along with. Titles include Away in a Manger (The Statler Brothers); The First Noel (Pat Boone); God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen (Bing Crosby); Hark! The Herald Angels Sing (Pat Boone); It Came upon the Midnight Clear (Burl Ives); O Come, All Ye Faithful (Bing Crosby); O Holy Night (Lee Greenwood); O Little Town of Bethlehem (Burl Ives); Silent Night (Brenda Lee); and more. For our full catalog of holiday books, please visit our Holiday Songbooks section.

We also want to point out a a great new book for pianists Etudes for Jazz Piano. Written by Emiko Hayashi, this book is a must have for all pianists seeking a creative approach to developing left and right hand coordination. The exercises and solos (based on the chord changes to well-known standards) are rhythmic, colorful, and fun to play. The chapters cover six specific areas of left hand development and left/right hand integration, with practical application from standard jazz tunes in the form of musical solo piano pieces. This book will definitely be an essential part of your practice routine. Besides improving your hand coordination, it will challenge you to think differently about it. All of the concepts are easily applicable to the real world. Highly endorsed! Spiral-Bound, so it opens easily and lays flat on your keyboard music stand.
