Happy new year to all! We are back again, with a wonderful report from sunny New Orleans and a bountiful plethora of new items with which to open another productive, music-filled year.

The Jazz Education Network conducted its second annual conference in New Orleans last week, and in all ways it was a tremendous success. Early reports suggested that attendance was up as much as 60% or more, which was yet another milepost on the thus far very successful road this organization is paving. The stately Roosevelt Hotel was brimming with musicians, students, and fans of jazz from all over the world, who were universally happy to see the continued maturation of the organization we all need. JEN's existence ensures an annual gathering of basically anyone who wants to be a part of the world of jazz, be it from the perspective of education, performance, history, or retail, or just to be included in a truly unique social gathering. The 2012 conference will be held from January 4-7 in Louisville, KY, and please watch the JEN website for information as it becomes available: www.jazzednet.org. JEN is doing marvelous and sorely-needed work, and would appreciate support from any and all jazz fans.

We are excited to announce the arrival of Don Sickler Jazz Lines Publications Editions! We are happy to be working with Don to further the growth of the existing library of magnificent charts from the pens of many of jazz's greatest small group arrangers. The first publications are charts done for the Jazz Messengers by Hank Mobley and for the Jazztet by Art Farmer and Tom McIntosh. There will be many more forthcoming in this series, so please check our new release pages in the coming months.

We once again thank everyone for your support - it is sincerely appreciated every day of the year!

alt
MOX-NIX: JAZZTET/ART FARMER
Art Farmer originally wrote this tune for his United Artists 1958 recording date released as 'Modern Art.' He later created this three-horn arrangement for The Jazztet and recorded it on the 1960 'Meet the Jazztet' album (Argo). The chart features trumpet, tenor saxophone, and trombone with piano, bass, and drums.
alt
A NOVEMBER AFTERNOON: JAZZTET/TOM MCINTOSH
This great Tom McIntosh arrangement was written for The Jazztet and recorded on "The Jazztet at the Birdhouse" in May 1961. This arrangement features trumpet, tenor saxophone, and trombone with piano, bass, and drums. This is part of the Don Sickler Jazz Lines Publications Editions Series.
alt
SWIFT AS THE WIND: TADD DAMERON
In 1962 Tadd Dameron was commissioned by Benny Goodman to write 5 arrangements for an upcoming tour to Russia. Around the same time he was also writing material for an upcoming record date that is now known as 'Magic Touch.' For Goodman he wrote Just Plain Talkin', Moon from the East, Fontainebleau, On a Misty Night, and an arrangement of Swift As the Wind. He wound up adapting for Benny Goodman's group arrangements that he was already working on for his own record date. This arrangement of Swift As the Wind was published in 1963 and was based on the music that he recorded in 1962 for 'Magic Touch' (the Goodman recording substituted a clarinet solo for the tenor solo but is otherwise the same).
alt
EZZ-THETIC: GEORGE RUSSELL
The Charlie Parker with Strings album arranged by Jimmy Carroll was so successful that a touring ensemble was put together for concerts. Examination of the arrangements in the Charlie Parker with Strings book revealed that Parker not only had settings of classic songs that were never recorded for Norman Granz, but also he had asked Gerry Mulligan and George Russell to arrange their recent (ca. 1950) compositions for him. Mulligan's version of Rocker is well known as a live recording has long been available. A private recording from 1952 has Bird roaring on another Mulligan composition that was previously unknown as a Bird with Strings arrangement, Gold Rush. Even more interesting is that George Russell arranged Ezz-Thetic for the group. There are no live performances documented, and until the discovery of the string book, it was not known that Russell even wrote this version for Bird. Any previously unknown piece of music by this composer, especially from this era, is a major discovery.
alt
BLUE SAMUEL: SAMMY NESTICO
Recorded on the SWR Big Band CD Fun Time and adapted from the tune Blue Daniel, this advanced chart sounds harder than it is. It features a sax chorus and solos by alto sax, tenor sax and trombone, along with some powerful ensemble choruses between optional solos. Saxophones and trombone play the melody on the first two choruses and a reprise at the end.
alt
OUT OF THE NIGHT: SAMMY NESTICO
Recorded both on the Sammy Nestico CD A Portrait Of Sammy and on the SWR Big Band CD Fun Time, this exciting jazz samba in 3/4 time is written for advanced groups. Lead trumpet extends to a written high D6, no woodwind doubles are required, and it features solos for electric guitar and tenor saxophone. A percussion part for conga is included.
