Hello again from sunny New York State!

The Jazz Education Network is working very hard to create the new jazz organization that we have all been missing. Their website is www.jazzednet.org, and we are thrilled that they have announced their first annual conference, which will take place May 20-22 at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. ejazzlines is a proud Charter Partner of JEN, and we very enthusiastically encourage everyone to explore what they are doing, and to please make your support and plans to attend their first conference known. Jazz very badly needs an annual gathering where we can all meet, and let's all do our part to make it happen again and to do it right with JEN.

The fourth series of Jazz Icons DVDs is nearly upon us. This series will have seven individual discs featuring Art Blakey (with Freddie Hubbard, Nathan Davis and Jaki Byard!), Art Farmer, Anita O'Day, Coleman Hawkins, Erroll Garner, Jimmy Smith, and Woody Herman. In other words, another fantastic lineup of legends representing decades of jazz immortality. The street date is October 27, and we will do our best to have them as soon as possible. Please check our new DVD release pages and our home page links regularly to be among the first to have these instant classics.

Jazz Lines Publications keeps rolling out the Supersax charts - Dewey Square and Just Friends being the very newest releases in our ever-growing catalog. We continue to be very gratified by the response to our publishing Med Flory's fantastic and challenging Supersax arrangements. Please rest assured that it has only stiffened our already steely resolve to bring more and more previously unavailable classics to life under the auspices of the rapidly maturing Jazz Lines Publications imprint.

The JLP catalog now totals 75 charts, and please just email us if you would like a copy of the full JLP 2009 Fall Catalog emailed or mailed to you.

Wynton Marsalis turned 48 Sunday. Has he really been around that long? Wynton's public persona often overshadows his actual music for some, and we here at ejazzlines fight that situation by listening to Wynton play quite often. When leaving opinion aside, and listening to his incredible playing, the objective observer realizes - rather quickly - that Wynton is simply one of the greatest trumpeters to ever lift a horn. His chops, his soul, the beauty and majesty of his playing, his love of the music's history - they all work perfectly together to scream out that jazz is indeed alive and well.

For those of you who like to keep up with new jazz releases, below are some items that you may wish to know about.

We once again thank everyone for your support - it is sincerely appreciated every day of the year!

Rob and Doug at ejazzlines

ALL SEPTEMBER 2009 DVDs

alt WILLIE NELSON AND WYNTON MARSALIS PLAY THE MUSIC OF RAY CHARLES
The late Ray Charles, though perhaps best known as the de facto creator of soul music, was genuinely beyond category, combining gospel, blues, jazz, and country to form one of the most original styles in 20th-century music. Joined by Norah Jones on several of the 15 tunes in this 90-minute show (recorded in 2009 at New York's Lincoln Center), Marsalis and Nelson use Charles's songs to tell the tale of love that's found, then lost, and then found again.
alt FRED ANDERSON: 21st CENTURY CHASE
Chicago tenor saxophone legend and proprietor of the longest standing and most adventurous avant garde jazz club in Chicago, Fred Anderson celebrated his 80th birthday in March 2009 and Delmark was there to capture it. All three of Fred's earlier Delmark albums were live at the Velvet but the excitement level here is unmatched as the show was sold out weeks in advance.
alt THE DRUMMERS OF FRANK ZAPPA
This DVD features performances, roundtable discussions, and interviews with some of the best drummers to ever work with Frank Zappa: Terry Bozzio, Chester Thompson, Chad Wackerman, Ruth Underwood, and Ralph Humphrey.
alt LENNY BREAU AND BRAD TERRY LIVE AT THE MAINE FESTIVAL
This rare video performance, which was recorded live at the Maine Festival at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine on August 2nd, 1980, features the only known existing video footage of Lenny Breau playing his acoustic seven-string guitar. Lenny and Brad perform two popular Jazz standards, 'Emily' and 'Autumn Leaves.'

OCTOBER 2009 BIG BAND CHARTS
SEPTEMBER 2009 BIG BAND CHARTS

DEWEY SQUARE: SUPSERSAX
Here is Med Flory's arrangement of 'Dewey Square' This arrangement features an original Charlie Parker solo transcribed in full by Med Flory, and harmonized to be played by a standard big band sax section (2 altos, 2 tenors and 1 baritone).
JUST FRIENDS: SUPERSAX
Here is Med Flory's arrangement of 'Just Friends' as recorded by Supersax on 'Supersax Plays Bird,' (from 1971) and later recorded live in Japan in 1975 on 'Japanese Tour Vol. 1.' For the original Capitol Records recording in 1971 there was the addition of trombone (Carl Fontana) and trumpet (Conte Candoli) parts. For the live recording those parts were abandoned and they featured trombone improvisation instead (by Frank Rosolino). We've included the original parts though they are optional - the arrangement plays fine with improvisation instead. All the interludes and solos are cued on the piano part so that the arrangement may be played without brass. Plus, we have included chord changes on the brass parts so that they can improv instead of play the written parts.
BUT BEAUTIFUL: CHUCK OWEN
This arrangement features some 'meaty' changes and a groove that alternates between hip-hop and straight-ahead swing. Trumpet and guitar (piano can substitute) are prominently featured throughout before the powerful tutti recap leads us into a very funky ending with soloists blazing! Guitar also get to show his/her sensitive side with a rubato into to their solo. Recorded by the Jazz Surge on 'Madcap' and commissioned originally by the Band of the U.S. Airforce Reserve Jazz Ensemble.
COUSIN MARY: PAUL MURTHA
This medium-tempo swing tune is a great way to introduce your young players to jazz legend John Coltrane. The tune itself is easy to play and the solo section is easy to manage since it uses the blues progression. Perfect for festivals.
