Back again we are, with news and another crop of great new items!

Jazz Lines Publications is ecstatic with and humbled by the excellent worldwide response we have received as a result of publishing Med Flory's outstanding and truly unique Supersax arrangements. We thank everyone most sincerely once again, and we are very proud to announce the availability of four more in the series: Bloomdido, Blues For Alice, Confirmation, and K.C. Blues. We now have nine total Supersax charts available, and will continue issuing more (Just Friends, Chi Chi, and Dewey Square are up next). The other most recent JLP release is Gil Evans' Moon Dreams.

The JLP catalog now totals 73 charts, and please just email us if you would like a copy of the full JLP 2009 Fall Catalog emailed to you.

We were thrilled last week to receive a brand new issue of Jazz Times, which we sincerely hope means that the venerable magazine is back and here to stay. One of the very few absolutely essential magazines covering jazz, it is indispensable, and I am sure we are but a few among the very many who feel quite relieved at its return.

For those of you who like to keep up with new jazz releases, below are some items that you may wish to know about.

We once again thank everyone for your support - it is sincerely appreciated every day of the year!

alt DAVID BROMBERG AND HIS BIG BAND LIVE
The multi-instrumentalist and musicologist has made the Count Basie Theatre a crucial pit stop in his annual tour schedule for each of the last four years. While Bromberg may take the spotlight for an unaccompanied number or two, its his role as bandleader and raconteur that prompted the New York Times to brand him electrifying. A performance by the 12-piece David Bromberg Big Band fireballs forward like a bull in a used record shop.
alt ANDRE PREVIN: THE KINDNESS OF STRANGERS
Andre Previn has enjoyed an inarguably remarkable career, rising from humble beginnings as a German refugee to become one of the world's best respected composers and orchestral directors. In 1998, Previn expanded his horizons to include opera as he wrote the score for an operatic adaptation of Tennessee Williams' classic drama - A Streetcar Named Desire. This film was made during the preparations, rehearsals and first performances of the opera in San Francisco.
alt FRANK VIGNOLA: 50 JAZZ GUITAR LICKS YOU MUST KNOW
Frank Vignola guides you through some of the most essential and commonly used phrases and licks used in jazz guitar. alt ON THE FLIPSIDE OF SOUND
"I thought I knew this man - a great friend and colleague with whom I've often toured over the past 15 or so years - pretty well, but after reading this memoire, my eyes were really opened! Fascinating! Valery Ponomarev's skill with storytelling nearly matches his prowess with the trumpet, and the content of his remarkable stories - and of course his outstanding playing - is rich, intelligent, humorous, and naturally, always swinging. Enjoy this book, then go listen to his music!"--Don Braden, JazzMusician/Composer/Educator

FEATURED NEW BIG BAND ARRANGEMENTS:

OCTOBER 2009 BIG BAND CHARTS
SEPTEMBER 2009 BIG BAND CHARTS

BLOOMDIDO: SUPSERSAX
Here is Med Flory's arrangement of 'Bloomdido' as recorded by Supersax. Charlie Parker's original solo was transcribed in full by Med Flory and then harmonized to be played by a standard big band sax section (2 altos, 2 tenors and 1 baritone) with a trumpet and rhythm section (piano, bass, and drums).
K.C. BLUES: SUPERSAX
Here is the Supersax version of 'K.C. Blues' as recorded on the 1988 Stone Bird record.
CONFIRMATION: SUPERSAX
Here is the Supersax version of 'Confirmation' as recorded on the 1988 'Stone Bird' record (it was also previously recorded in 1974 on 'Salt Peanuts'). Like the other Supersax arrangements that we publish this is not a transcription. The original, hand-written manuscript has been used to produce this arrangement. This arrangement did feature a trumpet solo by Conte Candoli. There is no trumpet part, however, as he improvised over the changes. An open solo section is included.
MOON DREAMS: GIL EVANS
Moon Dreams was clearly an important musical milestone for Gil Evans. There is strong evidence to suggest that Moon Dreams was the first arrangement written for the Miles Davis Nonet (later to be called the Birth of the Cool ensemble). This lush ballad is absolutely gorgeous, though it will take a lot of work to get it just right. This was recently recorded by the Dutch Jazz Orchestra on their CD 'Moon Dreams: Rediscovering the music of Gil Evans and Gerry Mulligan.'

In our never-ending daily effort to present the best selection of interesting new items for you, as of this newsletter we have added 22 new DVDs for October 2009 and 17 for September 2009; 41 new music books for October 2009 and 55 for September 2009; 9 new big band and combo arrangements for the month of October 2009 and 31 for the month of September 2009.
