As regular readers of this newsletter know, we here at ejazzlines and Jazz Lines Publications recently published all of the original charts from Oliver Nelson's seminal classic album The Blues and the Abstract Truth. We were able to do this thanks to the generous cooperation of Oliver Nelson Jr. Last winter, we had the idea to try to put together a concert at the annual Jazz Education Network conference which would celebrate the half-century since this album's release, and also would announce the availability of all of the charts, legally and accurately published with the full cooperation of Oliver Nelson Jr. We worked on this idea with Oliver Jr, and submitted a proposal to the Jazz Education Network, and we were ecstatic when they enthusiastically accepted it. The concert will be a featured event on Saturday night January 7 at 10 PM in the main ballroon of the Galt House Hotel in Louisville. We owe a special thank you to Dr. Lou Fischer at JEN for his patience, cooperation, and assistance in organizing this event.
After months of planning and reaching out to great musicians, we can finally announce the final lineup for The Blues and the Abstract Truth Celebration Band. The first member was Dr. Larry Ridley, the very first person we called. Dr. Ridley graciously accepted, and seemed very pleased to take the chair of his good friend and all-time bass legend Paul Chambers. After Dr. Ridley was on board, we contacted two men who we knew would be attending the conference, and who, in addition to being great players and legends of jazz education, seemed very likely to be generous enough to also give their time for this event. So on piano we have Shelley Berg, Dean of the Frost School at the University of Miami and eminent educator and author. Our drummer is Leon Ndugu Chancler, a Grammy-nominated drummer who has played with everyone from Miles Davis to Frank Sinatra to Kenny Rogers, and whose beat is heard on Michael Jackson's megahit Billie Jean. Once we had the rhythm section down, Oliver Jr reached out to two good friends of his, Chip McNeill and Glen Wilson from the University of Illinois, who will be manning the tenor and baritone sax positions. Both are well-known educators, and Chip's impressive career includes being musical director for Arturo Sandoval.
So at this point, we had trumpet and alto sax left open. We contacted Jon Faddis, a true gentleman, and he recommended Terell Stafford, whose career achievements and virtuosity speak for themselves. He is currently Director of Jazz Studies at Temple University, and we are very, very lucky to have him in the band's Freddie Hubbard chair. Finally, we were able to sign up another legend, the great Bobby Watson, for the last position, alto sax. Like so many greats, Bobby graduated from Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, and has for decades been a leading jazz player, composer, arranger, recording artist, and educator. As Terell played with Bobby's Horizon for several years, their familiarity with each other will only serve to further enhance what we feel is going to be an incredible concert. These last two gentlemen's final agreement to be a part of this band left us with a lineup better than we could have dreamed of. Our ability to assemble a group like this with limited resources is a testament to the generosity and dedication to education that all seven of these men possess. We again thank them all deeply and humbly for honoring Jazz Lines Publications, and our co-sponsors, Oliver Nelson Jr and Jamey Aebersold, by allowing us to form a true all-star band for the ages made up of virtuoso players who are all also wonderful people.

We once again thank everyone for your support - it is sincerely appreciated every day of the year!

EVENING STAR: BENNY CARTER Benny Carter originally wrote this melody in 1960 for inclusion on his Further Definitions album (it was originally titled Blue Star). In 1992 he took the tune and created this big band arrangement as an alto sax feature. This is a fairly straight-forward arrangement that would be perfect for a less-experienced band to feature a guest soloist. There are no saxophone doubles. |
HORIZON REASSEMBLED: BOBBY WATSON This medium-up Latin arrangement was previously recorded in a quintet form on Horizon Reassembled (Bobby Watson & Horizon - Palmetto 2102). This big band version has not yet been recorded. The arrangement starts with a sax quartet intro. There is a solo section with backgrounds (solo changes in C, B-flat, E-flat) and a shout chorus. Medium-up Latin (quarter note = ca. 120). |
LEMONCELLO: BOBBY WATSON/ARTHUR WHITE This Bobby Watson tune was arranged by Arthur White. Though never recorded in this big band form, it was previously recorded as a quintet arrangement on Horizon Reassembled (Bobby Watson & Horizon - Palmetto 2102). There is a solo section with backgrounds (solo changes in C, B-flat, E-flat) and a great shout chorus. Funky swing (quarter note = ca. 176). |
THIS I DIG OF YOU: MIKE TOMARO This jazz classic was penned by tenor saxophone great Hank Mobley. Mike's up-tempo swing chart is solid from beginning to end and will make a great concert opener or closer. |

OSCAR PETERSON TRIO: THE STUTTGART CONCERT Filmed in April 1988, this recording takes us back to the legendary Oscar Peterson radiating a high amount of vitality and delight in playing. The virtuoso, always a fan of Frank Sinatra, leads his trio through a set of standards very reminiscent of The Chairman, including You Make Me Feel So Young, It Happened In Monterey, I Get a Kick Out of You, I've Got You Under My Skin, and many more. |
FLY IN A BOTTLE A documentary Featuring Medeski Martin and Wood on tour and in the studio. Taking a look into the minds and lives of the band, drummer/percussionist Billy Martin directed the first feature film in the band's history. Working through a year-long period of personal 16mm film and HD camcorder footage of MMW on the road and in the studio during the Radiolarians recordings, the film provides an extremely intimate portrait of the band. It highlights the trio's intricate relationships with each other and with the music they have worked to create over 20 years as a band. |
BENNY CARTER ALL-STARS The legendary Benny Carter, the great alto sax player, is surrounded here by a true all-star group which consisted of Nat Adderley on trumpet, Red Norvo on vibraphone, Horace Parlan on piano, Red Mitchell on bass and Ronnie Gardiner on drums. It is a memorable program of standards from the Great American Songbook including Nat Adderley singing his own classic jazz composition Work Song. |
PARIS REUNION BAND: FOR KLOOK This DVD is a magnificent tribute to the legendary drummer Kenny Clarke who died in 1984 and to the Paris Jazz scene of the 1960s. Kenny Clarke or "Klook" spent the later part of his life in the French capital. The Paris Reunion Band was formed by sax player Nathan Davis in honour of "Klook" and featured in PRB are great jazz musicians like Woody Shaw, Dizzy Reece, Johnny Griffin, Slide Hampton, Kenny Drew, Jimmy Woode and Billy Brooks. |
