SPANISH DANCE: GIL EVANS/CLAUDE THORNHILL There were a few adaptations of classical pieces in the Thornhill band book; Arab Dance from The Nutcracker Suite and The Old Castle from Pictures at an Exhibition as well as pieces by Schumann, Grieg, and Brahms. This adaptation of the fifth dance (Andaluza) from Enrique Granados's 12 Dances Espanolas was probably written sometime in 1947 and was recorded for radio transcriptions in 1949. This publication presents Evans' original, uncut version. |
MY SHIP: GIL EVANS/MILES DAVIS This is the brilliant ballad treatment of the Kurt Weill/Ira Gershwin standard by Gil Evans as recorded by Miles Davis on the Miles Ahead album. |
MARY'S IDEA: MARY LOU WILLIAMS/ANDY KIRK This tune was originally composed by Mary Lou Williams in 1930 and recorded by Andy Kirk. In 1938 she revised her earlier arrangement for Kirk's larger ensemble that consisted of 4 reeds, 3 trumpets, 1 trombone, guitar, piano, bass, and drums. |
HAPPY HOOLIGAN: GERRY MULLIGAN/ELLIOT LAWRENCE Gerry Mulligan arranged for Elliot Lawrence in the mid 1940s just before he went to work for Claude Thornhill. This arrangement was recorded by Elliot Lawrence in 1955 though probably written about 8 or 9 years earlier. This is a great arrangement that features the trumpet section. |
SING, SING, SING: TOMMY NEWSOM/TONIGHT SHOW BAND Tommy Newsom takes this old tune and turns it on its head. He has created an outstanding and original version of this extremely popular melody. This chart was arranged for Doc Severinsen and The Tonight Show Band. This chart just swings and swings and swings. Your audiences will love it. Be prepared to play it lots of times. |
FRAME FOR THE BLUES: SLIDE HAMPTON/MAYNARD FERGUSON Finally, Slide Hampton's incredible music is in print. This fantastic chart was written for the Maynard Ferguson Dream Band. If you have a strong lead trumpet player, this is the best slow, swinging blues chart you could ever have in your big band library. This is one of the iconic charts in the history of big band composition. |

BILL EVANS TRIO: LIVE IN HELSINKI 1970 This DVD contains a true rarity, a film made in 1970 in the home of Finnish composer Ilkka Kussisto (whose two sons are famous violinists) when the Bill Evans Trio visited him for a private performance. The Trio plays three tunes and is interviewed between tunes by Kussisto and his friends. The grand piano was brand new and Evans liked it. In these intimate surroundings, the usually shy Evans relaxes a bit, espcially during the last tune, during which he even responds to the general applause with a spontaneous smile. A true rarity and wonderful collector's item. |

INTERVALLIC EAR TRAINING FOR MUSICIANS Steve Prosser's "Intervallic Ear Training for Musicians" is the product of 35 years studying and teaching interval awareness in music. The text provides a step by step method for assimilation of, as well as graded exercises for, each interval. Each chapter concludes with mastery exercises and etudes. After adequate study of the text, the student will be able to hear, recognize, read, and write music through the use of musical intervals. This skill is particularly helpful in dealing with music that is extremely chromatic, tonally ambiguous or rapidly modulating. |
JAZZ ARRANGING/JAZZ ARRANGEMENT Comparable to a course, the reader will be guided step by step from the grassroots to more advanced and complex ways of writing. Explanations are thorough and cover the questions time and again asked by students as well as the issues arising when working in an artistic situation. Through refined verbalization and a vast number of musical examples this book should contribute to a clear understanding of these guidelines, and foster the student's ability to realize the issues when arranging. |

This book along with its accompanying audio represents a comprehensive guide to all things arpeggio. It delves into traditional applications of arpeggios, as well as how they relate to slash chords, modal music and more. The student will learn about how arpeggios fall over standard chord progressions, as well as how to embellish arpeggios to make them more musical in performance situations. |
