Jazz Lines Publications is proud to announce the publication of Benny Carter's Central City Sketches. In 1987, Benny Carter was invited to give a concert of his music with the American Jazz Orchestra. The concert would be a career retrospective: classic music he wrote in the 1930s and '40s, compositions from the '60s including themes he'd written for motion pictures, and a suite composed specifically for the concert. This suite, Central City Sketches, and the resulting studio-recorded CD released by Musicmasters, were praised by critics who were thrilled that Carter was still creating beautiful, swinging music at the age of eighty. Jeffrey Sultanof was present at that concert, and can attest that the audience went wild when they heard this new music that often recalled Kansas City and the swing era. The sources for these publications are the original parts, which were heavily marked up with changes and corrections that were made prior to the premiere. In one case (People Time) a score that was engraved by Phil Woods was consulted. These wonderful charts are now available as a complete set or individually.
As previously mentioned, Jazz Lines Publications and Oliver Nelson Jr. are working together to present a concert celebrating Oliver Nelson's The Blues and the Abstract Truth record on Saturday night January 7 at the third annual Jazz Education Network conference in Louisville, KY. A new band is being formed to play this classic record in its entirety from the original charts which have recently been published by Jazz Lines Publications in agreement with Oliver Jr. The first luminary to confirm his association with this event is bass legend Dr. Larry Ridley. Dr. Ridley is Professor of Music, Emeritus at Rutgers University and is also involved with Swing University at Jazz at Lincoln Center. He has a resume dating back to the 1950s, and has played with Thelonious Monk, Lee Morgan, Hank Mobley, Freddie Hubbard, Dexter Gordon, Ornette Coleman, Horace Silver, and countless others. We are honored that Dr. Ridley has generously agreed to fill the chair of his dear friend the great Paul Chambers in the band we are assembling. Please stay tuned, as we will be announcing the remainder of the band in the coming weeks. All of the information on JEN and the upcoming conference can be found at www.jazzednet.org.
We once again thank everyone for your support - it is sincerely appreciated every day of the year!

CENTRAL CITY SKETCHES: BENNY CARTER This suite, Central City Sketches, and the resulting studio-recorded CD released by Musicmasters, were praised by critics who were thrilled that Carter was still creating beautiful, swinging music at the age of eighty in 1987. The Suite is available as a complete set, and the movements are also all available separately. Includes Central City Blues/Hello, People Time, Promenade, Remember, and Sky Dance. |
BLUES IN MY HEART: BENNY CARTER Benny Carter wrote this swing-era classic in 1931 and initially arranged it for Chick Webb's band. Benny revised his interpretation of the tune several times over the years settling on this arrangement recorded by the American Jazz Orchestra. This arrangement is set in a medium rumba feel and features solos for alto saxophone and trombone. An open solo section is also included. This is not hard to play and is a great example of Benny's writing. |
OOP BOP SH'BAM: SUPERSAX/MED FLORY This arrangement of Dizzy Gillespie, Gil Fuller, and Jay Roberts' bebop-era classic tune was recorded by Supersax on their 1977 record Chasin' the Bird. Med Flory based this 5-horn arrangement on Charlie Parker's 1949 Royal Roost performance of the tune. This chart does feature a trumpet part and some singing by the band. |
DON'T BE THAT WAY: TERRY GIBBS/BOB BROOKMEYER This Bob Brookmeyer arrangement was written for the Terry Gibbs Dream Band and was recorded in 1959 and released on Volume 1. This is a great swing arrangement of the Benny Goodman classic standard. We have included optional Bb and Eb solo parts so that it may be played with any featured soloist. |
HYMN OF THE ORIENT: CLIFFORD BROWN/GIGI GRYCE Here is a great Gigi Gryce arrangement for three horns as recorded by Clifford Brown in 1953. |
AFRODISIA: KENNY DORHAM This Kenny Dorham Latin arrangement was recorded in 1955 on Afro/Cuban (Blue Note). This is fully arranged with great backgrounds during the solos. |
KAYAK: KENNY WHEELER Here is a brilliant Kenny Wheeler up-tempo swing arrangement featuring solo flugelhorn and optional female voice. Solos for flugelhorn, trombone, trumpet, and tenor with optional open solo section. |
THAT'S LIFE: GORDON GOODWIN Gordon Goodwin's medium-slow treatment of this familiar standard swings hard right from the start. This expertly crafted chart features plenty of tutti ensemble writing, solo space for trumpet and piano, and a short but potent sax soli. Silky smooth! |
