Edition: Jazz Big Band Arrangement with Vocal

Description: Ballad - Medium

Publisher: Jazz Lines Publications

Here is another classic Billy May arrangement from the Francis A. and Edward K. record from 1967.

Frank Sinatra, at the tail end of his greatest period, spent an afternoon with the Ellington band, and the result is some fantastic music, matching The Voice with one of the great jazz groups of all time. Jazz Lines Publications is very proud to publish these tunes, making the music of a truly landmark and historic recording session available to the public for the first time.

This has been engraved from the original manuscript: this is not a transcription. In addition, this arrangement has been authorized and produced with the full support of the Estate of Billy May.

This arrangement is the only occurrence of Sinatra recording the Al Dubin/Victor Herbert classic Indian Summer. This is not a very complicated arrangement technically-speaking. However, there are some VERY sophisticated and lush voicing that the band will need to give serious thought to - especially where dynamics are concerned. A proper balance is a must in order to have this come off the way May intended it to. Tenor 1 doubles on clarinet and baritone doubles on bass clarinet - though both are very brief doubles. Like the other arrangements from this record, there were originally only 3 trombone parts and no guitar. There is no guitar part with this chart - it really won't work for almost all of the arrangement. In fact, Duke Ellington is tacet throughout quite a bit of it. Lastly, the drum part consists of a slow swing on the ride cymbal with occasional hit-hat through most of the chart. There are no range issues at all and the vocal key is F throughout.
