December 2011 Newsletter: The Jazz Lines Publications Release of Eddie Sauter's Focus!

Click here to view this newsletter online

Jazz Lines Publications is extremely proud to present one of the most unique works of the 20th century, one which is perhaps the very best example of the merging of classical music and jazz: Eddie Sauter's complete Focus. It is possibly the greatest and most important string work ever composed for a jazz musician. Tenor legend Stan Getz was very familiar with and fond of Sauter's writing; Getz sat in with one of Sauter's bands at a shared date in Los Angeles in 1954, and after substituting for the singer on several vocal arrangements, Getz loved the results. When he later was discussing recording a large project with Verve's Creed Taylor, Getz specifically requested that Sauter compose a work for him. The result is Focus. Part of the unique nature of this work is how it was created with deliberate melodic 'holes' or areas in which Getz was given room to weave his own melodic ideas over the classically-themed backgrounds. Getz loved this project, felt that it truly challenged him, and considered it his masterpiece. Many months of painstaking work were put into this by Rob DuBoff, Jeff Sultanof, Alex Chilowicz, and Andrew Homzy, and it was edited and re-edited again and again to try to come as close as possible to truly representing Sauter's original ideas and intentions. We proudly present this classic historic work with the full cooperation of Eddie Sauter's son Greg, and our hope is that bands the world over will be able to revisit this truly inspirational and landmark creation, and bring it to life for lovers of jazz, classical, and all genres of music.

Once again, we ask everyone to consider attending the third annual Jazz Education Conference in Louisville if you have not already. It will be held January 4-7, 2012. Jazz Lines Publications and ejazzlines will be at booths 905 and 1004 in the exhibit hall. We also will be proud co-sponsors along with Oliver Nelson Jr. and Jamey Aebersold of The Blues and the Abstract Truth Celebration Band concert, with an all-star group of Bobby Watson, Terell Stafford, Dr. Larry Ridley, Ndugu Chancler, Shelly Berg, Chip McNeill, and Glenn Wilson recreating the timeless album in its entirety from the newly-published Jazz Lines Publications charts. For all of the relevant info on the JEN Conference, please visit their website: www.jazzednet.org.

FOCUS: EDDIE SAUTER
This is quite possibly the most important string work ever composed for and recorded by a jazz musician. Eddie Sauter's score defies all categorization. Similar to Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition, each movement presents a unique mood ready to transport the listener to a fairytale scene. Unlike other commerical and jazz soloist with strings compositions, this piece features almost no written part for the soloist. The soloist is required to blend with the orchestra and imagine (through improvisation) the 'missing' part.
alt
PRETTY BLUE EYES: TERRY GIBBS DREAM BAND/BILL HOLMAN
We are happy to add another release to the growing catalog of Jazz Lines Publications charts from the great Terry Gibbs, this one done by eminent arranger Bill Holman. This Holman waltz arrangement was written for the Terry Gibbs Dream Band and was recorded in 1962 at the Summit Club. Solos are featured for vibes and trombone. We have included optional Bb or Eb solo parts so that it may be played with any featured soloist.
alt
THINGS TO COME: DIZZY GILLESPIE BIG BAND/GIL FULLER
Big band repertoire really doesn't get much more difficult than this arrangement. Taken at a bliserting 300 bpm, this band showcase was arranged by Gil Fuller for Dizzy Gillespie's bebop big band of the mid-to-late 1940s. Gillespie's big band performed this arrangement many times and it was used as a band theme.
alt
TEMPUS FUGIT: DIZZY GILLESPIE BIG BAND/GIL FULLER
This arrangement of the timeless tune by Bud Powell was written by Gil Fuller for Dizzy Gillespie's bebop big band of the late 1940s; however, this arrangement was never recorded. Solos are featured for alto sax and trumpet.
alt
MINOR WALK: DIZZY GILLESPIE BIG BAND/GIL FULLER
This arrangement was recorded at one of the last sessions Dizzy Gillespie made for RCA Victor in 1947, before another recording ban took place during most of 1948. In 1949 J.J. Robbins & Sons published a stock arrangement of this tune that was nearly identical to the arrangement from Dizzy's book. The only major difference was that the published version was for 3 trumpets instead of 4. We have recreated the 4th trumpet part.
alt
RAY'S IDEA: DIZZY GILLESPIE BIG BAND/GIL FULLER
This arrangement by Gil Fuller was first recorded by the Dizzy Gillespie Big Band in 1946. In 1949 J.J. Robbins & Sons published a stock arrangement of this tune that was nearly identical to the arrangement from Dizzy's book. The only major difference was that the published version was for 3 trumpets instead of 4. We have recreated the 4th trumpet part. Featured are solos for trumpet, tenor saxophone, and trombone. An optional open solo section has been included.
alt
THAT'S EARL, BROTHER: DIZZY GILLESPIE BIG BAND/GIL FULLER
This arrangement was written by Gil Fuller for the Dizzy Gillespie Big Band in the late 1940s but it was never recorded. The song was previously recorded as a sextet version in 1946. In 1949 J.J. Robbins & Sons published a stock arrangement of this tune. The only major difference between the published version and the Gillespie band version was that the published version was arranged for 3 trumpets instead of 4. We have recreated the 4th trumpet part.
NUTCRACKER SUITE: LES BROWN/FRANK COMSTOCK
This is a superb transcription of Frank Comstock's absolutely brilliant chart of Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite written for the Les Brown band. It is seven and a half minutes of musical inspration, and definitely not for the faint-hearted. This is a very difficult chart which will require thorough familiarization by your players in order to manage the many transitions of mood, feel and tempo that occur in the piece.
