At long last, Jazz Lines Publications is proud to announce the release of the arrangements from Oliver Nelson's timeless 1961 classic The Blues and The Abstract Truth. All six arrangements are available with the scores and parts engraved from the originals used on the session by the inimitable lineup of Oliver Nelson, Eric Dolphy, Freddie Hubbard, Bill Evans, Paul Chambers, Roy Haynes, and George Barrow. All of the songs are available individually or as a complete set. The titles are: Stolen Moments, Hoe-Down, Cascades, Yearnin', Butch and Butch, and Teenie's Blues. We again thank Oliver Nelson Jr., who has bestowed upon us the honor of being the guardians of his father's work. We are thrilled to publish these arrangements and make them available to student and professional bands throughout the world to perform and study.
In association with the Jazz Education Network, we also are proud to announce the band for the very special The Blues and The Abstract Truth Celebration Concert which will take place at the third annual JEN convention in Louisville, Kentucky, on Saturday night January 7, 2012. Oliver Nelson Jr. has put together a multi-generational band of greats to pay homage to his father's masterwork, and they will play these newly-published charts in their entirely in a very special evening of jazz. We will have Benny Golson on tenor sax, Antonio Hart on alto sax, Terell Stafford on trumpet, Gary Smulyan on baritone sax, Roger Kellaway on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Grady Tate on drums. We once again encourage everyone interested in jazz and its future to check out the Jazz Education Network if you have not already. The organization's website has all of the relevant information on the 2012 convention: www.jazzednet.org.
In a most appropriate coincidence, today is Eric Dolphy's birthday. Mr. Dolphy played alto sax and flute on The Blues and The Abstract Truth, and was one of the most unique, creative, interesting, and original instrumentalists in the history of jazz. He grew up in Los Angeles, played in big bands, and then broke through with the Chico Hamilton Quintet. He moved to New York in 1959, soon joined Charles Mingus' band, and remained at the very forefront of the cutting edge of jazz for the remainder of his tragically short five remaining years. In addition to his time with Mingus and Nelson, Dolphy led classic sessions such as Out There and Out to Lunch, and recorded as a sideman with giants like John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, Booker Little, George Russell, and others. He also worked with many future greats in their early years, such as Freddie Hubbard, Herbie Hancock, Bobby Hutcherson and Woody Shaw, and clearly influenced the styles of these men as well. Eric Dolphy left a truly singular legacy in his 36 years. He was a pioneer of forward-looking avant garde jazz, and combined a free jazz style and sound with traditional jazz esthetics. Thankfully, much of his work remains in print, and he is truly one of the figures who help make jazz such a varied, exciting, vibrant art form.
We once again thank everyone for your support - it is sincerely appreciated every day of the year!

THE BLUES AND THE ABSTRACT TRUTH [COMPLETE SET]: OLIVER NELSON This is the complete set of six arrangements from the Oliver Nelson 1961 album The Blues and the Abstract Truth. The titles are: Butch and Butch, Cascades, Hoe-Down, Stolen Moments, Teenie's Blues, and Yearnin'. Each individual arrangement is also available separately. Thanks to an agreement with Oliver Nelson, Jr., these six classic compositions are now available, edited using Nelson's original manuscripts. Nelson now joins the legendary names whose music is available from Jazz Lines Publications. |
STOLEN MOMENTS: OLIVER NELSON In February of 1961, the sessions that later constituted the album The Blues and the Abstract Truth were recorded for a new jazz label distributed by ABC-Paramount, Impulse Records. The sessions were produced by Creed Taylor, who would go on to produce classic recordings on the Verve label, and his own CTI label. It was this album that became Nelson's first masterpiece and Stolen Moments has become the most popular and recognizable tune from the record. All six tracks from the record are now available individually or as a boxed set. |
SKYLINER: CHARLIE BARNET/BILLY MOORE, JR. Here is the definitive arrangement of Skyliner from the original published parts. This is not a transcription. This arrangement, written by Billy Moore and recorded in 1944 by Charlie Barnet, features a tenor saxophone soloist that doubles on soprano (this was Barnet's part). In addition to that tenor/soprano part, there is a standard reed section of 2 altos, 2 tenors, and a baritone. The arrangement featured a written introductory piano solo. We have retained this solo but have included chord changes in the event that your pianist wishes to improvise. The soprano sax part can certainly be played on the clarinet. |
COCONUT CHAMPAGNE: VICTOR LOPEZ With an upbeat samba groove, everybody gets some action, and the classic Maynard Ferguson trumpet solo is harmonized for the trumpet section---in a playable range. There is a sax soli that can also be a solo for any sax. An optional percussion part will complete this package. |
BIRDLAND: VICTOR LOPEZ A 1970s jazz staple with solo space (written) for alto 1 and/or trumpet 2, nice chord voicings throughout, and the lead trumpet top note to only a written G on top of the staff. Effortless to assemble and perform! |
CONFIRMATION: VICTOR LOPEZ This bebop standard offers something for everyone! The melody is stated by alto and trumpet, solo space (written) is for trombone and alto, but the abundance of ensemble work lets everyone shine. |
HEARTACHE TONIGHT: MICHAEL BUBLE If you are looking for a great hard driving vocal number for a concert or dance gig, then this is it! Cy Payne has carefully transcribed the Michael Buble version from the album Crazy Love. This title was originally a hit recorded by The Eagles. |
LOOK OF LOVE: CY PAYNE The 1960s hit number, as recorded by Dusty Springfield, in the original steady beat/Latin style. A tenor sax solo is included as an alternate to the vocal. 5/4/4/4 - additional tenor part may be used if played as instrumental (3 tenor saxophones). |

From his debut 1973 performance of Ife to his final appearance in 1991 where he looked back unsentimentally at one of his greatest moments, Sketches Of Spain, the 1960 collaboration with producer Gil Evans, each performance is as varied and different as can be. He hit the Montreux stage in '85, '86, '89, '90 and, only months before his death, in 1991. Representative highlights from all those years are included. |
MAX ROACH: LIVE AT BLUES ALLEY This 1981 live show at Washington DC's Blues Alley features drummer extraordinaire Max Roach and his band. Filmed lovingly by filmmaker Gary Keys, this intimate portrait of Roach is stunning in its simplicity. The music and interplay between the musicians is the main focus, almost like the camera is eavesdropping on a private jam session. The band sounds full and fierce, the film is crisp and personal, and every note is a celebration. |
GERRY MULLIGAN: JAZZ AMERICA This film from Gary Keys focuses on the amazing saxophonist and arranger, Gerry Mulligan. His warm tone on the baritone and his delightful persona are on full display, capturing a live show from 1981. From his arrangements and playing on Miles Davis' Birth of the Cool to his quartet with Chet Baker, Mulligan will always be associated with Cool Jazz, but the music in this film touches on all aspects of his 30-plus years of playing. This snapshot features a master taking a look at his long and storied career with a crack band supporting his every move. |
DIZZY GILLESPIE: DREAM BAND JAZZ AMERICA In 1982, the master showman Dizzy Gillespie performed at Lincoln Center with his celebrated Dream Band, which brought together master musicians who had played with Dizzy or been influenced by him. Driven by the stellar drums of Max Roach, the Dream Band is on fire and Dizzy is in fine form. Including amazing turns from Gerry Mulligan, Jon Faddis, Milt Jackson, Paquito D'Rivera, Candido and more, this film shares some of the backstage love and respect the players had for Diz. |
DEFINITIVE LENNIE TRISTANO: COPENHAGEN - NEW YORK - BERLIN This DVD compiles all of his known filmed appearances for the first time ever on a single release. It begins with Tristano's superb solo performance in Copenhagen at Tivoli Gardens on October 31, 1965. This is followed by an extremely rare TV show, appearing here for the first time ever on DVD. It was filmed at the Half Note Club in New York on June 6, 1964, and captures the atmosphere of Tristano's regular quintet with Lee Konitz and Warne Marsh playing live. Finally, this DVD closes with two tracks featuring Tristano at the celebrated Berlin Jazz Piano Workshop on October 30, 1965. |
BERLIN JAZZ PIANO WORKSHOP 1965 Berlin's 1965 Jazz Piano Workshop reunited some of the instrument's finest exponents from the full stylistic spectrum of jazz piano. The great Teddy Wilson was on hand to represent the swing piano style; the father of jazz piano improvisation Earl Hines was also present; Lennie Tristano served as an exponent of modern exploratory piano playing; two of the idiom's most lyrical modern pianists, Bill Evans and John Lewis, were in attendance; and a nexus between the traditional and the modern, Jaki Byard - who alternated free and stride passages on the same tune - filled out this historic lineup. |
