Oliver Nelson Jr. has been gracious enough to allow us to publish the arrangements from his father's classic work, The Blues and the Abstract Truth. 2011 marks the 50th anniversary of this record, and like many timeless works, it sounds every bit as fresh and interesting today as it must have sounded when it was released. The musicians Oliver Sr. put together helped create the singular character of this session. Oliver Nelson, Eric Dolphy, Bill Evans, Freddie Hubbard, George Barrow, Paul Chambers, and Roy Haynes: Few groups in the history of jazz have had the rich diversity and the degree of virtuosity that this group possessed. Every cut on the album is fantastic, but Stolen Moments shines above them all; fifty years later it remains one of the most beautiful and memorable songs in the jazz canon. Jazz Lines Publications will soon release these arrangements, from the actual music used by the players on the session half a century ago. We are honored to make this music available to bands everywhere in the hope of furthering the already wide and deep influence of this legendary work. Please watch our new release pages for the pending announcement of the release of this music, which will be available both as a set and as individual pieces. As previously mentioned, we are also working with Oliver Jr. to present a concert at the JEN Convention in January 2012 which will celebrate this record; watch these pages for more information on this event.

Tuesday May 17 marks the 80th anniversary of the birth of the great Jackie McLean. John Lenwood McLean was born in New York City; he was the son of a guitarist, his stepfather owned a record store, and among his neighbors were Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, Bud Powell and Sonny Rollins. Jackie recorded often during the 1950s, but it was his work in the 1960s which firmly established him as one of the giants of the hard bop and modal jazz genres. His tone is among jazz's most distinctive and easily recognizable - his slighly sharp, always searing sound gave a unique intensity to just about every session he participated in during this era. McLean began to set himself apart in other ways in the late 1960s. He started his long association with the music program at the University of Hartford in 1968, and in 1970 he and his wife Dolly founded the Artists Collective www.artistscollective.org, also in Hartford. This institution has worked tirelessly to preserve and promote the cultural and artistic contributions of the African Diaspora. Both the Hartt School at Hartford and the Artists Collective continue to thrive, and when viewed alongside his recorded legacy, one sees a picture of a truly great man. Jackie McLean created dozens of wonderful, groundbreaking albums as a leader; he enhanced the recordings of many more as a sideman; he helped nurture the careers of great musicians as others had done for him; and perhaps most importantly he created educational and cultural institutions which for decades have helped strengthen and broaden America's artistic foundation.

We once again thank everyone for your support - it is sincerely appreciated every day of the year!
