MARCO BENEVENTO & FRIENDS: LIVE IN NYC
At the outset of 2008, Marco Benevento set up shop at New York City's Greenwich Village music space,
Sullivan Hall, for a month-long residency. Calling it home for five Thursday nights in January, Benevento invited a who's who in modern jazz and improvisational
rock music to perform with him each week in various configurations. Each night he'd lead his musical co-conspirators through two sets of consistently breathtaking improvisations.
Whether it was the Bitches Brew-esque sonic explorations of the Benevento-Steven Bernstein-Bobby Previte-DJ Olive collaboration, or the glorious post rock ferocity of Benevento-Brad Barr-Joe Russo,
or Benevento's own trio with Reed Mathis and Andrew Barr celebrating the release of their debut album Invisible Baby, each performance took on a life completely its own.
As the sold out crowds from week to week will attest, these shows were the stuff of legend.

JACK WILKINS: JAZZ GUITAR WORKSHOP
Wilkins performs featured tunes with an upright bassist and a rhythm guitarist. Solos and examples are primarily of the single-line type, with fine improvised sections and lightning-fast runs.
Topics include: soloing over 2-5-1 progression; through circle of 5ths; tritone substitution; arpeggios that fit chord progressions; starting from any finger in any position; and the concept of contrary motion.
On-screen numbers help correlate examples with monologue and performance.

November 2009 BIG BAND CHARTS
October 2009 BIG BAND CHARTS

GIL EVANS: ANTHROPOLOGY
Anthropology was written by Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. Evans arranged the line in 1947, and it was recorded by Claude Thornhill for Columbia Records and for radio transcriptions.
The instrumentation calls for 5 saxophones doubling clarinet, 3 trumpets, 2 trombones, 2 French horns, tuba, guitar, piano, bass, and drums. Alternate parts are included. This master arrangement,
edited by Jeffrey Sultanof, comes with background and performance notes.
|
LOVER, COME BACK TO ME: BILLY BYERS/FRANK SINATRA
Here is a Billy Byers chart that was arranged for the 'Sinatra Live at the Sands' performance and recording with the Count Basie Orchestra.
However, this arrangement was not used for that performance. We know it was written for that show as the date written on the manuscript is June 21, 1965,
which corresponds to dates on other manuscripts that were used (Where Or When is marked June 20, 1965).
And, Byers indicated that is was for 'Basie-Sinatra.' This arrangement has been produced directly from the original manuscript.
This bluesy chart set in a medium swing tempo features some very nice triplet figures throughout. Trombones open with plungers and
go back to them at the end of the arrangement. Similar to the other Sands arrangements there was an optional 5th trumpet part written for
Harry 'Sweets' Edison that just included chord changes for background fills behind the vocal. There are no saxophone doubles or solos. The vocal key is F throughout.
|
CHASING THE BIRD: SUPERSAX
Here is Med Flory's arrangement of 'Chasing the Bird' as recorded by Supersax on the 1977 record of the same name.
Charlie Parker's original solo was transcribed in full by Med Flory and then harmonized to be played by a standard big band sax section (2 altos, 2 tenors and 1 baritone) with a trumpet, trombone,
and rhythm section (piano, bass, and drums). This arrangement also features an open solo section ('rhythm changes').
|
CHI CHI: SUPERSAX
This Supersax arrangement, from the album 'Supersax with the L.A. Voices, Vol. 3' features the usual saxophone lineup of 2 altos, 2 tenors, 1 baritone with trumpet
and the addition of 5 voices [soprano, 2 altos, tenor and baritone). The original recording featured a trumpet solo by Conte Candoli as well as bass and piano solos.
There is also an open solo section. The vocal parts are optional and have been cued into the sax parts so that they may be played instead.
The arrangement plays fine without using the vocal parts altogether.
