Jazz Lines Publications' latest releases bring our catalog to 174 arrangements. The most recent additions are the new Tadd Dameron Series and Wes Montgomery Series. As your feedback continues to show us, there is indeed great demand for the historic arrangements we have been publishing, most of which have never been previously available. Please stay tuned, as the spring and summer will see more from Gil Evans, Terry Gibbs Dream Band, Benny Carter, Supersax, and others.

We were recently honored to attend an event at the Rose Theater at Jazz at Lincoln Center which featured the music of Charlie Parker, focusing on the classic Charlie Parker With Strings Sessions. A great group led by trombonist Vincent Gardner and featuring Charles McPherson and Wess 'Warm Daddy' Anderson on alto sax first played some Bird bop tunes. They then were joined by members of the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Americas to re-create the sounds of Bird With Strings. The band sounded great, and it was a rare treat to hear this music performed live by world-class musicians. An additional thrill for us was the fact that most of the arrangements used for the show were our own Jazz Lines Publications. In fact, two were performed for the first time ever: George Russell's Ezz-Thetic and John Lewis's Scootin'. Being a small part of the revival of this music was truly one of the great experiences we have had in the decade of our business' existence. We thank Kay Niewood and our friends at Jazz at Lincoln Center for their generosity with us. Their website is www.jalc.org and we encourage everyone to learn more about this organization, which does so very much via live performance and education to keep the fires of jazz burning brightly.

The Jazz Education Network continues its impressive growth, and has just released all of the details for the Third Annual Conference. It will be held in Louisville, KY, on January 4-7, 2012. Their website is www.jazzednet.org and they have now posted all of the relevant information on attending, exhibiting, applying to present a clinic or a performance, press credentials, housing, and new sponsorship opportunities as well. Mary Jo Papich, Lou Fischer, Rick Kessel, Andrew Surmani, Jose Diaz, John Clayton, and everyone at JEN are working very hard to continue to build an organization which has already given the jazz world so much. They tirelessly labor to promote jazz education, and the annual JEN conference is THE gathering for everyone involved in or interested in jazz's past, present, and future. ejazzlines and Jazz Lines Publications have proudly exhibited at the first two events, and will certainly be there in 2012; we hope to present a clinic as well. We strongly urge everyone to support this organization in any way you are able; JEN is a central part of the jazz world and needs everyone's help to continue to thrive.

We once again thank everyone for your support - it is sincerely appreciated every day of the year!

IT MIGHT AS WELL BE SWING: TERRY GIBBS DREAM BAND/BILL HOLMAN
Bill Holman wrote this arrangement for the Terry Gibbs Dream Band in 1959. This is a straight forward swing arrangement featuring solos for vibes. This is not very difficult to play. We have included optional Bb and Eb solo parts so that this arrangement is playable with any featured soloist (not just vibraphone).
alt
ON A MISTY NIGHT: TADD DAMERON
Tadd Dameron wrote this arrangement for Benny Goodman in 1962 for his tour of Russia (it wasn't recorded). He based it on the arrangement that he had recently written for his Magic Touch record. This arrangement is very close to the one from the Magic Touch album. The main difference is that for this arrangement he added a clarinet part (a solo part for Goodman), which was just the tenor saxophone part from his earlier arrangement. We have restored the tenor feature and removed the clarinet part so that it resembles the arrangement that was recorded on the Magic Touch album.
alt
IN THE LAND OF OO-BLA-DEE
Mary Lou Williams co-wrote this novelty song with her arranging and composition teacher Milton Orent. She arranged this for Dizzy Gillespie's band in 1949 and it was recorded with vocalist Joe Carroll. It was written to also feature Dizzy. His solo part is written in trumpet 5. We have also supplied the melody in the trumpet 5 part so that it may be played as a trumpet feature throughout without a vocalist.
alt
BUSTER'S LAST STAND: GIL EVANS/CLAUDE THORNHILL
Buster's Last Stand is one of the few fast swing pieces that the Thornhill band played. They recorded it for Columbia Records in 1942 shortly before a ban on recording was imposed by the music union, and it remained in the book when the Thornhill ensemble was re-formed in 1946. This edition comes from the original parts. There are some differences between the Columbia recording and this version, suggesting that Evans continued to refine and tinker with the piece after the war. A sixth reed was present at the original recording session, and this part seems to be missing. It is reconstructed here, although it is optional.

alt
AFTER THE RAIN: SAMMY NESTICO
The first chorus should be a two-beat feel before transitioning into a solid, straight-ahead 4-beat feel at the trombone chorus. Make sure the time has a sense of forward momentum throughout. The voicing at measure 69 sounds best if everyone takes some deep breaths and blows! Trombone figures must be short and crisp at measure 85, while saxes and trumpets are phrasing their lines. At measure 104 things should be nice and easy until the build-up at 108 for the ending.

alt
AIN'T NOBODY GETTIN' YOUNGER: SAMMY NESTICO
Featured on the SWR Big Band CD Basie-cally Sammy, this medium tempo chart features two trumpet plunger duets, along with solos for trumpet, tenor and optional alto saxophone. Some solid full-ensemble work adds depth and dimension to this rewarding excursion.

alt
AHA!: BOB MINTZER
Originally featured on the Yellowjackets' Altered State CD, this new big band version was commissioned by East Carolina University and is scheduled to appear on an upcoming Bob Mintzer Big Band CD. Elements of Brazilian samba and funk contribute to the unique groove of this interesting work for proficient groups. Two open solo sections offer experienced improvisers ample stretching room. Your band and your audiences will love this one!

SPEAK LIKE A CHILD: WILL CAMPBELL
This arrangement of Herbie Hancock's classic tune, Speak Like A Child, is scored for five saxophones (sattb) and standard rhythm section (piano, bass, & drums). There is a solo section which allows any combination of improvisers and backgrounds for the alto solo. A soli section follows soloists and concludes with a slow, pyramid ending. An advanced chord progression and detailed section writing is perfect for a strong saxophone section and as a contrast to concert programming. 5 Saxes.

COUNT BASIE: THEN AS NOW, COUNT'S THE KING
Jazz great William "Count" Basie comes back to life in this rich documentary, which traces the history of the pianist, composer, and bandleader over several decades. Filmmaker Gary Keys juxtaposes a roundtable discussion among old cats from the Count Basie Orchestra with recorded performances, including a cameo appearance in "Blazing Saddles." Archival clips and a gallery of portraits and snapshots show the ever-smiling face of a man as vivacious as the grooves he delivers--his good humor suffusing the music and the players going at it all around him, from Lester Young to Ella Fitzgerald.
alt
ERROLL GARNER QUARTET LIVE IN PARIS 1972 AND COPENHAGEN 1971
Erroll Garner was one of the few true audience favorites among Jazz pianists. His original compositions are completely unique both harmonically and melodically. This DVD includes two European concerts from the later years of Garner's long and fruitful career, backed by his working group and playing in a context which he favored during that period: the classic jazz piano trio with bass and drums, plus a conga drummer. The first took place in Paris on May 29, 1972, and the latter is from Copenhagen in May, 1971.
alt
JAMES BROWN - BODY HEAT: LIVE IN MONTEREY 1979
In 1969 at a concert in Monterey, James Brown announced his intention to retire from touring, but it wasn't until 1975 that he finally stopped. Then in 1979 three young television producers convinced him to make a comeback performance. This outstanding concert was captured and then due to unfortunate circumstances the videotapes were locked in a vault for twelve years before they could be seen. Brown's transformation of gospel passion into the compelling intensity of rhythm and blues, combined with meticulous choreography and energetic showmanship, is clearly demonstrated in this legendary concert footage.
alt
SOULIVE: BOWLIVE - LIVE AT THE BROOKLYN BOWL
In March of 2010, the members of Soulive hauled their instruments through the doors of a newly-opened warehouse-turned-music venue in Brooklyn that they would call home for the next two weeks. Eric Krasno, Alan Evans and Neal Evans called on a multitude of their closest friends and musical conspirators to join them over the next fortnight - creating an incredibly broad guest lineup that included some of the pre-eminent guitar virtuosos of our generation (Derek Trucks, Warren Haynes), some of the biggest names in hip-hop (Questlove, Rahzel), and some of the most inventive improvisational players in modern rock n' roll (Robert Randolph, Marco Benevento, Oteil & Kofi Burbridge).

FEATURED NEW BOOKS:

The latter part of March has seen many interesting new publications. In addition to the below, we have Mel Bay's Christmas Music for Guitar Ensemble, Alfred's Faces of Music, Cherry Lane's Exceptional Blues/Rock, two Hal Leonard piano books featuring the music of West Side Story, and many others. We also suggest a look at early March's best, which included Jazz Improv Basics: The All-Purpose Reference Guide Play-Along, The Complete Guide to Playing Brushes, Exploring Latin Piano, The Architecture of Music, and Flamenco's Guitar Guide.
