The Empire Jazz Orchestra, led by good friend of ejazzlines Dr. William Meckley, is a fantastic jazz ensemble of local professional musicians in residence at nearby Schenectady Community College here in upstate NY. Each spring the group presents a concert featuring a major jazz artist as guest soloist. Past greats have included Benny Golson, Jimmy Heath, and Slide Hampton. 2011's invitee was legendary altoist, cool jazz pioneer, and Birth of the Cool veteran Lee Konitz. As publishers of many Birth of the Cool arrangements, we were excited to attend both the rehearsal and the concert last Monday and Tuesday April 11 and 12. Mr. Konitz showcased his rhythmic and textural creativity as the band worked very hard to give him precisely the support he needed. We were especially gratified to see the band and Mr. Konitz work through and then play several of our own Jazz Lines publications charts: Gil Evans' arrangement of Anthropology for Claude Thornhill and two Birth of the Cool charts, Boplicity and Move. The final result was a wonderful trip through jazz history for a packed house and a truly appreciative crowd.

This Friday, April 22, marks a singular day on the jazz bass birthday calendar. In 1922 and 1935 respectively, Charles Mingus and Paul Chambers entered the world. These two men had vastly different styles and temperaments, but were among the greatest and most important bassists in the history of America's music. Mingus was a larger-than-life character, a brilliant composer, an innovator, and an outspoken activist for African-American rights. His contributions and legacy remain very much alive thanks to the tireless work of his widow Sue. Paul Chambers was simply one of the best and most beloved bassists in jazz history. When one considers that he passed before his 34th birthday, the volume of greatness he left behind is barely believable. His busy career ran from Miles Davis's Prestige records of the mid-1950s, to Monk's Brilliant Corners, to Coltrane's Blue Train, to Kind of Blue, to Oliver Nelson's Blues and the Abstract Truth to his own leader recordings and seminal sessions with Sonny Rollins, Lee Morgan, Hank Mobley, Sonny Clark, Cannonball Adderley, Dexter Gordon, Johnny Griffin, Wes Montgomery, and so many more. P.C.'s resume is that of THE jazz bassist of the period 1955-1969.

We once again thank everyone for your support - it is sincerely appreciated every day of the year!

SLITTIN' SAM: DREAM BAND/MANNY ALBAM
The tune Slittin' Sam (The Shaychet Man) was written by baritone saxophonist Al Epstein (shaychet is the Yiddish word for a Kosher butcher). Manny Albam took the tune and crafted a great arrangement that was first recorded on Gibbs's 1956 EmArcy record titled 'Swingin' with the Terry Gibbs Orchestra.' The Dream Band later recorded it in 1959. Unlike most of the Dream Band charts this one has parts for guitar and a 4th trombone. Alternate soloist parts have been included so that this may be played with any featured instrumentalist.
alt
FATHER KNICKERBOPPER: TINY KAHN
Norman 'Tiny' Kahn was a great bebop and swing drummer who died way too young, at the age of 30. He was also an outstanding arranger who wrote for many big bands including Woody Herman, Buddy Rich, Chubby Jackson, and Elliot Lawrence. This arrangement of Father Knickerbopper was written for Chubby Jackson's big band and recorded in 1949. It is a great, up-tempo swing tune featuring solos for piano, baritone sax, alto sax, tenor sax, and trumpet.
LET'S FACE THE MUSIC AND DANCE: ELLA FITZGERALD/PAUL WESTON
Let's Face The Music is another priceless Ella chart, transcribed from her Irving Berlin Songbook album. The vocal key is F.
