Shorter, Wayne

Wayne Shorter's lengthy career as a tenor saxophonist and composer have resulted in some of the most important innovations in jazz since the 1960s. Born in Newark, NJ in 1933, Shorter apprenticed in groups led by Horace Silver and Maynard Ferguson before joining Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers in 1959. He would serve as Blakey's musical director for 5 years, authoring some of the most memorable tunes in the Jazz Messengers' extensive catalogue.

Shorter was hired away by Miles Davis in 1964. As a member of the Miles Davis Quintet, Shorter's playing and soloing played an integral role in one of the most innovative groups in jazz history. He stayed with Davis through 1970, picking up the soprano saxophone along the way and playing a part in Davis' earliest jazz-rock fusion experiments. During this time period, he also led several classic recording sessions of his own for the Blue Note label.

Beginning in 1971, Shorter and keyboardist Joe Zawinul co-led the classic jazz-rock fusion band Weather Report. The band made several classic recordings until their disbanding in 1986. Shorter also made several appearances in more pop-oriented settings; his collaborations with Joni Mitchell and Steely Dan in particular stand out.

Since the mid-80s, Shorter has been involved in an incredibly diverse range of projects, ranging from continued electronic experiments to his current touring group, the Wayne Shorter Quartet, which pairs him up with young masters Danilo Perez on piano, John Pattitucci on bass and Brian Blade on drums.
