Barnet, Charlie
Although today his legacy is overshadowed by several of his contemporaries, for a brief period Charlie Barnet's band was considered to be on equal level with the top bands of the day. The scion of a wealthy railroad and banking family, Barnet went against the wishes of his family early by becoming a musician instead of a lawyer. His decision paid swift dividends, as he was leading a band for CBS Radio at age 18.
Barnet's first major success as a bandleader came with a 1939 take on the Ray Noble standard "Cherokee." His bands during this time period were prone to high levels of experimentation, both musical and social, as Barnet was one of the first big band leaders to embrace bebop as well as racial integration. His bands during this time period featured a number of musicians who would go on to make sizeable names for themselves, including trumpeters Maynard Ferguson and Clark Terry, clarinetist Buddy DeFranco, guitarist Barney Kessel and bassist Oscar Pettiford.
By the mid-1950s, Barnet had largely retired from performing, a luxury that he was afforded due to his affluent economic status. He continued to occasionally put together bands into the 1960s, but would never lead a regularly working band for the rest of his life. He passed away in 1991, leaving behind an underrated musical legacy that spans several musical developments.
