A slow, gentle bossa nova with dark, rich harmonies, A Pensive Soul sees its melody split between the guitar and flugelhorn, with background figures coming in behind the latter. The ensemble features a number of similarities to some of Gil Evans' work for Miles Davis. Dynamics should get no louder than a medium level through most of the arrangement, which will allow the writing to truly resonate. In addition to the melody, both guitar and flugelhorn also are featured as improvising soloists.
