Hagen, Earle
Earle Hagen (1919-2008) moved through the worlds of playing, arranging, writing and teaching seamlessly over the course of a career that lasted over half a century. He began playing trombone in big bands during the 1930s, eventually playing Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, and the Ray Noble Orchestra. Hagen's most famous composition, “Harlem Nocturne,” was originally written as a tribute to Johnny Hodges, and has been recorded by Duke Ellington, Harry James, the Glenn Miller Orchestra, Quncy Jones, and others. Hagen began writing music television in the early 1950s, working for The Dick Van Dyke Show, The MOD Squad, The Danny Thomas Show, That Girl, and the Andy Griffith Show. It's Hagen who is the voice of the famous whistle in the Andy Griffith show's theme. He worked as a principal scorer for 20th Century Fox under Alfred Newman. Earle Hagen is the author of the principal text books on scoring for film as well as teaching hundreds of emerging composers through his BMI scoring workshops. His autobiography, Memoirs of a Famous Composer Nobody Ever Heard Of, was published in 2000. Hagen died of natural causes in May 2008. He was 89.
