I AM JAZZ...IT'S MY LIFE/LEADERS: JAZZ IN PARIS 1988Lester Bowie, Arthur Blythe, Chico Freeman, and Cecil McBee; Rhapsody Films This new double feature has two film in entirety: ARCHIE SHEPP: I AM JAZZ...IT'S MY LIFE and LEADERS: JAZZ IN PARIS 1988. Description of Archie Shepp: I Am Jazz...It's My Life: Nothing if not eclectic, multi-instrumentalist, composer, poet, playwright and educator Archie Shepp has consistently remained one of the most controversial figures in the jazz scene since his first recordings back in 1960. As Frank Cassenti's intelligent film portrait so admirably reveals, he still pontificates endlessly on his favorite subjects -- the African origins and revolutionary purposes of jazz; the social invisibility and isolation of blacks -- but in the film's club sequences Shepp, whether on tenor or soprano sax or shouting his poems of protest, generates enormous emotions, swings like mad, and expertly builds his solos to an exciting climax while all the time acknowledging en route the debt he owes to Parker and Coltrane. Description of Leaders: Jazz in Paris 1988: The players, all in their 40s and 50s, play what their trumpeter LESTER BOWIE says is 'not jazz, not blues...let's call it schizo music.' The first piece is a long vamp leading to a mysterious, edgy, minimalist melody. Pianist KIRK LIGHTSEY, in a pleasant interlude, introduces his colleagues while lauding them to the skies. A fast, furious avant-bop tune finds CHICO FREEMAN's tenor in passionate form, ARTHUR BLYTHE super-intense on alto, bassist CECIL McBEE soloing with abandon and drummer DON MOYE providing energy-driven backup. There are backstage scenes with the musicians, mainly Bowie, expounding their theories: Elvis and the Beatles are black music, European classical music has black roots. The finale is a very basic, non-schizo blues. Please note that this is a DVD-R and may not be compatible with older DVD players.
