Edition: Jazz Octet Arrangement

Description: Swing - Difficult

Publisher: Jazz Lines Publications

One of Horace Silver's most charming tunes. The staccato interludes in 2 and the shift between even melodic eighth notes and the 12/8 texture of the interludes keep the piece interesting, shifting from bright tempo swing to moments of dramatic expectation. Transcribing and harmonizing an improvised solo can be a tricky business. Hank Mobley's solos are always melodically memorable and rhythmically straightforward enough to allow ensemble development. His beautiful solo is orchestrated for the saxophones with tenor lead. (There's a nice quote of the beginning of the tune 'Sidewalks of Cuba' at letter O.)

As always in music from this period, and especially most of Horace Silver's music, it is critical to get the eighth notes right. All melodic eighth notes except anticipations are played almost evenly. An excess of 12/8 feel will break everything into two note units of strong/weak groupings and destroy the melodic line.
