DESCRIPTION:
The fakebook is an interesting concept-a collection of melodies or "heads" with the chord changes, so that musicians can read the tunes and changes instead of having to play solely by ear and memory. The name "fakebook" comes from the old coinage that a musicians who is improvising over the chord changes is "faking," making up his or her own melody. The fakebook is a place to start, the structure on which the music is completed. This is the story of the fakebook and how it has impacted the world of jazz.
