First, a word about the tune Walkin': This song was actually originally named Gravy and was written by Jimmy Mundy and recorded by Gene Ammons in 1950. A few years later Miles Davis recorded the song, but by then Richard Carpenter - who was an accountant and not a musician - put his name on the tune and renamed it Walkin'. It became a standard and everyone knows it by this name.

In 1959 Art Pepper recorded 12 tunes backed by an 11-piece 'little big band.' The Marty Paich charts focused on 'Modern Jazz Classics' including this arrangement of the Gene Ammons composition 'Gravy' [AKA Walkin']. This arrangement featured Art Pepper on tenor sax. We have included third trumpet and trombone parts as alternates for the horn in F. This has been edited and engraved from the original score and parts as supplied to us by Laurie Pepper.
