Edition: Jazz Little Big Band Arrangement

Description: Swing/Hip-Hop - Medium

Publisher: Walrus Music Publishing

Little Brown Jug was originally a folk song composed by Joseph Eastburn Winner in 1869. It was a drinking song and at that time made references to many alcoholic beverages. It was also very popular during the American Prohibition years. Glenn Miller recorded this song in 1939 as an instrumental swing chart which became a huge hit for him while becoming one of the best known charts of the big band era. I have updated this chart stylistically and while it has two swings sections, it incorporates a very funky hip-hop groove. The chart opens with the piano soloing on the blues, a la Basie in the key of F, and then modulating to Little Brown Jug's original key of D-Flat like Count Basie's One O'clock Jump. When it modulates, after the piano solo, to D-flat the hip-hop/funk groove kicks in and the bass and drums set-up a solid groove (pocket) for the band. The bass line is written out but can be altered if the bassist has slap groove experience.
